Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: JOHN 15:9-11

Remaining with Jesus or his love seems to be an important theme in the gospel of John. John uses the word ‘remain’ more times than all the New Testament writers put together do. For John this theme is very important. Belonging to God or to the kingdom and remain with the father are as good as saying ‘be my disciple’.

‘Love one another as I have loved you’ says Jesus. In this saying Jesus becomes the model for all his disciples. But the love must be as Jesus has loved: the word as gives more meaning to love than any other word. Here in this passage Jesus says ‘as the father loves me so I love you’. For Jesus the love of the father is the model. So anyone loves the other as Jesus loves in turn loves the other as the father loves Jesus. What a marvel!

GOSPEL READING: JOHN 15:1-8

The listeners (the disciples) are familiar with this imagery. In fact every Jew should be so. In the Old Testament this imagery is used to speak about the people of Israel (see Isaiah chapter five and Psalm 80:8-18). Jesus always used these types of familiar imageries. They were shepherds and the story about the shepherds. Jesus used parables and stories that were real and useful and understandable to the listeners.

Pruning is done for the good of the plant. Vine should produce good and useful fruits. Useless branches are cut off and the fruit-bearable branches are pruned. Inward looking, entangling branches are pruned. Outward looking and upward looking branches are allowed to grow. Upward looking (giving glory to God) and outward looking (showing concern for others) bear fruit.
