Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: JOHN 21:20-25

Discipleship is personal and following of Jesus is not collective. This is the reason Jesus tells Peter, “What concern is it of yours? You follow me.” Jesus tells Peter not to be worried about the other followers and the way they would follow. Each disciple has his own way of following and bearing witness to Jesus. One might be asked to be martyr and the other may be asked to stay on and continue to bear witness through preaching etc.

Gospels are written to as testimonies to Jesus. The writers know the veracity of the writings and they are the only witnesses to it. Gospels do not need external verifications and testimonies to prove the genuineness of the writings. The gospels are not written to prove the historicity of the writings etc rather they are written as witnesses and communicate Jesus to the followers.

இயேசுவை பின்தொடர ஒவ்வொரு சீடரும் தனிப்பட்ட முறையில் அழைக்கப்படுகிறார்கள். ஒருவருடைய அழைப்பு மற்றவருடைய அழைப்பைப்போல் இருக்காது. சீடர்கள் இந்த வேற்றுமையை ஏற்று ஒவ்வொருவரும் அவரவருக்கு கொடுக்கப்பட்ட அழைப்பை ஏற்று வாழவேண்டும். நற்செய்திகள் எழுதப்பட்டது சாட்சியத்தை வெளிப்படுத்தவே. சாட்சியங்கள் வழியாக இயேசுவைப்பற்றிய உண்மைகளை நற்செய்திகள் வெளிப்படுத்துகின்றன.

GOSPEL READING: JOHN 21:15-19

In the gospel of John Jesus did not call his disciples at the beginning of his public ministry. At the beginning the followers heard the witness of John the Baptist (Behold the lamb of God) and followed him and continued to stay with him because Jesus said ‘come and see’. There following was their own response to the witness of someone else.

After resurrection Jesus called Peter and in the person of Jesus he called everyone else. Here the requisite to be a follower is love. Jesus asked Peter, ‘do you love me’. Jesus required a positive and an affirmative reply. Jesus confirmed his reply and again reconfirmed it before asking him to follow him. To be a follower of Jesus, the one wanting to be a follower has to openly declare that he loves Jesus (the person Jesus).

இயேசுவின் சீடராவதற்கு அன்பு அடித்தளமானது. அன்பு இல்லையேல் சீடத்துவம் (பின்தொடர்தல்) இல்லை. இயேசுவின் உயிர்ப்பு வரை சீடர்கள் அவரோடு இருந்தார்கள் பார்த்தார்கள் (வந்து பாருங்கள்) ஆனால் சீடர்கள் ஆவதற்கு அன்பு முக்கியமானது.
