02.10.11 LEADERS

Posted under Reflections on October 1st, 2011 by

"Hear another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a tower. Then he leased it to tenants and went on a journey. When vintage time drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to obtain his produce. But the tenants seized the servants and one they beat, another they killed, and a third they stoned. Again he sent other servants, more numerous than the first ones, but they treated them in the same way.  Finally, he sent his son to them, thinking, 'They will respect my son.'  But when the tenants saw the son, they said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and acquire his inheritance.' They seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What will the owner of the vineyard do to those tenants when he comes?" They answered him, "He will put those wretched men to a wretched death and lease his vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the proper times." Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the scriptures: 'The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes'?  Therefore, I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit. (Mt 21:33-43)

This parable was not totally new to the listeners. Already in the Old Testament the people of Israel were considered to be the vineyard. Psalm 80 and Isaiah chapter five spoke very clearly about the vineyard and the vineyard was the people of Israel. God was the owner of the vineyard. He did everything possible for the vineyard but the vineyard did not produce the desired fruit.

This parable of the Matthew’s gospel speaks about the tenants. These tenants were the leaders of the people of Israel. These leaders did not bother about their duty to the vineyard and to the owner. The leaders ill-treated the servants of the owner. Probably the tenants wanted to possess the vineyard for themselves. Or they thought that the owner would not come back to take possession of the vineyard. Leaders played against the owner.

Theo owner sent his own son to the tenants. The tenants treated him also very badly and killed him. Owner would come to take severe action against the tenants. They would be put to death. The tenants (leaders) are the centre of today’s parable. Leaders have not been faithful to their duty and also they have behaved wrongly in dealing with the servants and the son.

01.10.11 CELEBRATION

Posted under Reflections on September 30th, 2011 by

The seventy (-two) returned rejoicing, and said, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us because of your name." Jesus said, "I have observed Satan fall like lightning from the sky. Behold, I have given you the power 'to tread upon serpents' and scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy and nothing will harm you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven." At that very moment he rejoiced (in) the holy Spirit and said, "I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him." Turning to the disciples in private he said, "Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. For I say to you, many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it."  (Luke 10:17-24)

There was a celebration at the completion of the mission. The disciples rejoiced over the defeat demons at the name of Jesus. Name of Jesus is more powerful. At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow… Give thanks to the Father in the Name of Jesus etc are the belief and the practice of the early church. God’s glory and the power was revealed in the name of Jesus.

Celebration and rejoicing should not be there because the evil is overcome. Evil will be overcome at the end. That which goes beyond the end (of evil) is the heaven. So what is more important is that the names are written in heaven. The disciples should celebrate the entry into heaven more than the victory over evil. Shall we say that we should rejoice not because we have overcome evil rather because we have achieved doing good and being good.

The disciples are blessed and praised for the opportunity that they have had in seeing the kingdom established on the earth in the person of Jesus. The prophets and many waited and longed to see this. (Simeon himself sang the song NUNC DIMITIS in the Temple when he was blessed to hold the child Jesus in his hands.) There were many like him who wanted to see…
