25.05.10 LOST IS GAIN

Posted under Reflections on May 24th, 2010 by

Peter began to say to him, "We have given up everything and followed you." Jesus said, "Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the gospel who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age: houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come. But many that are first will be last, and (the) last will be first." (Mk 10:28-31)

Anyone who gives up material wealth (houses and land) and relations (brothers, sisters, mother and father) for the sake of Jesus and for the sake of the gospel is rewarded. Jesus and the gospel should be preferred to anything else in the world. One should be ready to lose even relationships for the sake of the gospel and Jesus. Among the relations, one should be ready to give up the past (parents) and the future (children). So, one should be ready to give the past, the future and the present (material security)

Whatever is lost is not lost for ever. What is lost is gained hundredfold (strange!!!). He receives the past, the present, and the future, a hundredfold. This is the way God works. But God also promises persecutions. This is the sign of a follower. This is the share that he has from the master. The master met with persecutions, so also should the follower be.

The greater reward is the eternal life. Eternal life, here, according to this evangelist, is something that will happen in the age to come. So, besides the present security, Jesus, promises persecutions and eternal life. Yes, lost is a gain and persecutions will lead to eternal life.

24.05.10 ETERNAL LIFE & FOLLOW & SALVATION

Posted under Reflections on May 23rd, 2010 by

As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him, "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"…

Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, "You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to (the) poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me."…

"Then who can be saved?" Jesus looked at them and said, "For human beings it is impossible, but not for God. All things are possible for God." (Mk 10:17-27)

Three important themes are discussed in today’s reading. They are: eternal life, following Jesus, and salvation. Eternal life is achieved; it seems, by observing the commandments of the Lord. Because when the man questioned Jesus about inheriting eternal life; Jesus in his turn enquires him about observing the commandments. And when the man answers in positive, Jesus is pleased with him.

The next stage, which is following of Jesus, is achieved only by detaching oneself from wealth and material possessions and also by distributing them to the poor. The only hindrance to following of Jesus is attachments particularly to material things. The way out of this is only by distributing the wealth(whatever it may be) to the poor. Shall we say, detachment from material things and attachment to the poor are means of following Jesus.

Salvation is not the work of man. It is impossible for human beings. Man, on his own and on his own efforts can never be saved. Salvation is a gift of God. God gives it freely to whomsoever he wishes.  Everything is possible for God. For human beings there are certain things which are possible and there are other things which are impossible. Even the things which are impossible for man is possible for God.
