*First Week of Advent, Monday — 3rd December 2018 — **Gospel: Matthew 8,5-11 *
*Faith that Triggers Universal Banquet *
The Centurion, the first Roman character who walks on stage, comes forward personally before Jesus to get a healing for his servant. He is the only person in the Gospel who astonishes (8,10) Jesus himself for affirming his own style of authority (8,9) through persistent healing appeals (8,5.8). Jesus’ high admiration, most rare emotional outburst, not only drew attention of his followers but made him affirm doubly Centurion’s loyalty as ‘faith’ (8,10.13); a faith that exceeds Jesus’ experience in Israel. His faith also triggers Jesus to unfold a new teaching about the universalistic kingdom, which includes privileged Israel and Gentiles as well to enjoy the Patriarchal banquet (8,11).
Every Centurion is a leader for hundred men, who acts as a mediator between Roman Empire and Civilians within a territory. And sometimes he enforces military discipline and torture, thus instilling fear and hatred in the society. However, this Centurion of Capernaum stands tall with his appeal on behalf of his servant; a sign of love for his neighbour and a humanitarian love for the one in need. Although he knew who he was and what his authority meant, yet in his approach to Jesus he showed great deal of genuine humility (8,5), unworthiness (8,8) and a deferential reply (8,6.8 as Lord); once again a rare virtue in colonial Rome. And in the presence of Jesus, he exhibits skills of recognition that when it comes to healing diseases, Jesus possessed the same sort of commanding authority that he possessed over his soldiers and slaves (8,9). Thus he identified God’s creative and living “word power” personified in Jesus, which most other men fail to realize until then.
நூற்றுவர்தலைவன் தன் பணியாளன் குணம்பெற இயேசுவை நேரடியாக வந்து சந்திக்கின்றான். நற்செய்தியிலே இயேசு இவர் ஒருவரை மட்டுமே கண்டு வியந்ததாக குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளது. காரணம் இவர் தன்னுடைய அதிகாரத்தை வெளிப்படுத்திய விதமும் அவருடைய பணியாளன் குணபெற இயேசுவை பணித்த விதமும் தான். மேலும் இயேசு தாம் வியந்த இம்மனிதரையும் அவருடைய செயல்பாட்டையும் கூர்மைப்படுத்தி இவர் சிறந்த ‘நம்பிக்கையின் நாயகன்’ என்று தம்மைச் சூழ்ந்திருந்தவர்களுக்கு ஒரு ஒப்புமை வழியாக அடையாளம் காட்டுகின்றார். அதாவது இவரின் நம்பிக்கை போன்று இஸ்ரயேலிலும் தாம் கண்டதில்லை என்று மொழிந்தார். இவ்வியப்புக்குரிய நம்பிக்கையினால் தூண்டப்பெற்ற இயேசு ‘ இறையாட்சியின் விருந்து’ தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்ட இஸ்ரயேலருக்கு மட்டுமல்ல எல்லோருக்கும் உரியது என்ற புதிய கருத்தை வெளிப்படுத்துகின்றார்.
உரோமை அரசின் இடைநிலையாளராக பணிசெய்யும் நூற்றுவர்தலைவன் கப்பர்நகூம் நகரின் பொறுப்பாளன். பணியின் பொருட்டு துன்புறுத்தி கண்டிக்கும் இவர்களை மக்கள் வெறுத்து ஒதுக்கினாலும் நம் கதாநாயகன், கப்பர்நகூம் தலைவன், பண்பாளனாக அன்பானவனாக காண்கின்றோம். தன் அடிமையின் துன்புறும் நிலைகண்டு மனிதநேயத்தை வெளிப்படுத்தும் இவன் உரோமை தலைவர்களில் வித்தியாசமானவன். தன்நிலையையும் தகுதியும் உணர்ந்து பணிவையும் அடக்கத்தையும் சேவையாக வாழ்ந்து காட்டியவன் இவன் சற்று வித்தியாசமானவனே. இயேசு தம் வார்த்தையால் வல்ல செயல் புரிய முடியும் என்ற உணர்ந்தது மட்டுமல்ல அதைச் செயல்படுத்திக்காட்டியவன் இவன். மற்றவர்களின் திறமைகளை இனம் கண்டு அதை வெளியுலகிற்கு அடையாளம் காட்டிய மாமனிதன் இந்நூற்றுவர்தலைவன்.
