*4th Sunday in Ord. Time – 03rd February 2019 — Gospel: Luke 4,21-30*
*Honour, shame and violence *
Jesus’ interpretation of the text “today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing” (4,21) doesn’t replicate the past meaning of the text, but recreates to the present situation. At first the people appreciated his interpretation and seemed to grant honour to his words. Immediately they questioned his ascribed honour, which every person inherits by virtue of being born that was equivalent to wealth (4,22). It implies how could such an honourable teaching come from a person of low status. This honour contrasts ascribed honour, which a person attains through achievements. As it was expected that an honourable person must defend his honour, we see Jesus defending his honour when his social status was questioned. In his response to the challenge, he quoted the scriptures (1 Chr 17,1.9; 18,1; 2 Kgs 5,1.14), for he knew that one was expected to establish links with the public to gain social, economic and political benefits by defending his honour. In resistance to put to shame, or being down played, one needs to rise to defend one’s inherited honour. This led to the third option, people’s resistance to grant him honour attracted violent reactions (4,25-27). Even though Jesus’ scriptural reference was somehow convincing, yet members of the synagogue regarded the response as a negative challenge to them and the village. As usual, anyone ashamed resorts to some form of reaction. But in this case, people failed to succeed with their intention of throwing Jesus off the hill, may be because they were ashamed completely by Jesus’ message and his usage of scripture as a method of interpreting the context.
“நீங்கள் கேட்ட இந்த மறைநூல் வாக்கு இன்று நிறைவேறிற்று” என்ற இயேசுவின் வார்த்தைகள் பழைய விளக்கங்களை பிரதிபலிக்கவில்லை, ஆனால், தற்போதைய சூழ்நிலைக்கு மீண்டும் புதுப்பிக்கிறது. தொடக்கத்தில் மக்கள் அவரது விளக்கத்தினை பாராட்டினர் மற்றும் அவரது வார்த்தைகளுக்கு மரியாதை கொடுத்தனர். உடனே அவர்கள் ஒவ்வொருவரும் பிறப்பால் பெற்றிருந்த, அதாவது செல்வத்திற்குச் சமமான அவரது மரியாதைக்குரிய கௌரவத்தைக் கேள்விக்கு உட்படுத்தினர். காரணம் இது போன்ற கௌரவமான போதனை ஒரு தாழ்நிலையினரிடமிருந்து எப்படி வரும் என்பதே. இக்கௌரவம் ஒரு தனி நபர் சாதனைகள் மூலம் அடையக்கூடிய மரியாதைக்கு முரணானது. இயேசுவின் சமூகநிலை கேள்விக்கு உட்படுத்தப்பட்டபோது தன்னுடைய கௌரவத்தை கண்ணியமாய் பாதுகாக்கின்றார். இச்சவாலுக்கான பதிலில் சமூக, பொருளாதார மற்றும் அரசியல் நலன்களை எதிர்நோக்கியிருக்கும் மக்களோடு உறவுகளை நிலைநாட்ட இறைவார்த்தையில் இருந்து மேற்கோள் காட்டினார். ஒருவரை மட்டம்தட்டுதல் அல்லது விழத்தாட்டுதல் வழியாக அவமானப்படுத்தும் போது கௌரவத்தை பாதுகாத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டிய நிர்ப்பந்தம் ஏற்படுகிறது. இச்சூழல் இயேசுவுக்கு மரியாதை அளிப்பதற்குப் பதிலாக மக்களின் எதிர்ப்பலையினால் வன்முறையை கொணர்ந்தது. இறைவாக்கு மேற்கோள்கள் திருப்திகரமாக இருந்தாலும் மக்களிடையே எதிர்மறையான சவால்களை உருவாக்கியது. எப்பொழுதும் போல் அவமானப்பட்டவர்கள் எதிரிகளாக உருவெடுக்கிறார்கள். இந்நிகழ்வில் இயேசுவை மலையிலிருந்து கீழே தள்ளிவிட முயன்ற மக்கள் தோல்வியே அடைந்தனர். அவர்களுடைய அவமானத்திற்குக் காரணம் இயேசு சூழலுக்கு ஏற்றாற் போல் சொன்ன தகவல்களும், இறைவார்த்தையை பயன்படுத்திய அணுகுமுறையும் சிறப்பாய் இருந்ததால்.
