*Fear and Rejection in witnessing Divine Power*
When the swineherds spread the news of what Jesus had done, people from throughout the Gerasenes region came to see what has happened. One might expect that the people would be overjoyed and respond with gratitude, perhaps inviting Jesus to continue his work among them. Instead, they react with fear and they beg Jesus to leave their region. The message and deeds of Jesus disturbed the people and challenged them in various aspects of life. The people’s reaction to such challenges are often fear and rejection as it is the case here. The normal reaction for people who have experienced divine power is fright that automatically leads to elimination. Both these responses exhibited in this region clearly manifest people’s less genuine faith, even though they had witnessed divine power through Jesus. Yet, the man freed from the demons demonstrated an attitude contrary to them. After his personal experience of liberation he expressed his desire to follow Jesus.
இயேசு செய்த அற்புதங்களை பன்றிகள் மேய்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்தவர்கள் அப்பகுதி மக்களுக்குப் பரப்பியதால், என்ன நடந்ததென்று கண்டறிய மக்கள் கெரசேனர் பகுதிக்கு வந்தனர். மக்கள் இதனைக் கண்டு நன்றியோடு மகிழ்ந்திருக்கலாம், அல்லது இயேசுவிடம் அவருடைய வேலையைத் தொடர வேண்டுமென அழைப்பு விடுத்திருக்கலாம். மாறாக, அவர்கள் அச்சத்துடன் நடந்து கொண்டு தங்கள் பகுதியை விட்டு வெளியேறுமாறு இயேசுவிடம் கெஞ்சிக் கேட்கிறார்கள். இயேசுவின் போதனைகள் மற்றும் அவருடைய செயல்கள் மக்களை கலங்க வைத்தது; வாழ்க்கையின் பல்வேறு அம்சங்களில் அவர்களுக்கு சவலாய் அமைந்தன. இத்தகைய சவால்களுக்கு மக்களின் எதிர்ச்செயல் பயம் மற்றும் நிராகரிப்பு ஆகும். தெய்வீக ஆற்றலை அனுபவித்தவர்களிடமும் எதிர்ச்செயலான அச்சம் ஒதுக்குதலுக்கு வழிவகுத்தது. இயேசுவின் தெய்வீக சக்தியை கண்ட மக்கள் அவரை அப்பகுதியை விட்டுப் போய்விடுமாறு வேண்டிக் கொண்டது அவர்களின் குறைவான நம்பிக்கையை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறது. ஆனாலும், தீய ஆவியிடமிருந்து விடுவிக்கப்பட்டவர் மட்டும் இம்மக்களுக்கு எதிரான மனப்பான்மையை நிரூபித்தார். அவர் இறையாற்றலை விடுதலையாக அனுபவித்த பிறகு இயேசுவைப் பின்பற்ற விரும்பினார்.
