*2nd week in Lent, Wednesday – 20th March 2019 — Gospel: Mt 20,17-28*
*Drink in His cup to suffer*
With courage and confidence Jesus walks ahead of his disciples to Jerusalem, where his punishment awaits him. He gives the longest and most detailed prediction of his passion and death. Each component – being handed over to the religious authorities, condemned to death, handed over to the Gentiles, mocked, flogged, crucified, and then raised on the third day – forms a section of the upcoming passion account of the gospel. This prediction mentions the specific sufferings of Jesus including crucifixion, which is a Roman means of execution, not a Jewish mode of punishment. Shockingly juxtaposed to Jesus’ suffering is the bold request of the mother of James and John. Jesus responds directly to James and John, though none of them seem to understand the significance of his passion predictions or the nature of his kingdom. Jesus’ response focuses on the image of drinking the cup, a metaphor used by the prophets to refer to Israel’s suffering (Is 51,17). Jesus applies this image to his approaching passion, promising James and John that they too will eventually share in his suffering. Jesus wants to convince his followers whether or not they can accept the cross, rather than on any prestige, status or power.
மனதைரியத்தோடும் நம்பிக்கையோடும் இயேசு எருசலேமை நோக்கி, தம் தண்டனையை எதிர்கொண்டு சீடர்களின் முன்னே செல்கின்றார். அவர் தனது பாடுகள், மரணம் பற்றிய நீண்ட மற்றும் மிக விரிவான கணிப்பை தருகின்றார். இதில் பல்வேறு கூறுகள் அடங்கியுள்ளன – மத அதிகாரிகளிடம் ஒப்புவித்தல், மரணத்திற்கு கண்டனம் செய்தல், பிற இனத்தவரிடம் ஒப்புவித்தல், ஏளனம் செய்தல், சாட்டையால் அடித்தல், சிலுவையில் அறைதல், மற்றும் மூன்றாம் நாளில் உயிர்த்தெழுதல். ஒவ்வொரு கூறுகளும் நற்செய்தியில் பாடுகளை வர்ணிக்கும் அடுத்தடுத்த பகுதிகளை கண்முன் கொணர்கின்றது. இக்கணிப்பில் இயேசுவின் குறிப்பிட்ட துன்பமான சிலுவையில் அறைதல் என்பது யூத முறைமை அல்ல, மாறாக, உரோமை அரசின் மரண தண்டனைக்கான வழிமுறையாகும். இயேசுவின் துன்பத்திற்கு எதிர்மறையாக அதிர்ச்சியூட்டும் வேண்டுகோள் ஒன்று யாக்கோபு மற்றும் யோவானின் தாயிடமிருந்து எழுகிறது. இயேசுவோ தனது பதிலை யாக்கோபுக்கும் யோவானுக்கும் நேரடியாக தருகின்றார். ஆனால், அவர்கள் இருவரும் இயேசுவினுடைய பாடுகளின் முக்கியத்துவத்தையோ அல்லது இறையாட்சியின் தன்மையையோ புரிந்து கொள்ளவில்லை. இயேசுவின் பதில் குடிக்கும் துன்பக் கிண்ணத்தை அடையாளப்படுத்துகிறது. இது இஸ்ரயேலின் துன்பங்களைக் குறிக்க இறைவாக்கினர்கள் பயன்படுத்திய உருவகத்தை பிரதிபலிக்கின்றது. யாக்கோபும் யோவானும் இயேசுவின் துன்பத்தில் பங்கு கொள்வார்கள் என்பதை இங்கு வாக்குறுதியாக அளிக்கின்றார். இயேசு தம்மைப் பின்பற்றுபவர்கள் அதிகாரம், தன்மானம், வலிமை இவற்றைவிட சிலுவையை ஏற்றுக் கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்பதையே இந்த உருவகத்தின் வழியாக கூறுகின்றார்.
