*2nd week in Lent, Thursday – 21st March 2019 — Gospel: Lk 16,19-31*
*Life of contradictions*
In the parable of the poor Lazarus and the rich man Jesus paints a dramatic scene of contrasts – riches and poverty, heaven and hell, compassion and indifference, inclusion and exclusion. The differences in this present life is contrasted with differences in eternity. The rich man enjoyed the pleasures of life, and Lazarus, the poor suffered physically and in want. But in the next life their conditions are dramatically reversed. The rich man ends up in torment, and the poor man resides at the side of Abraham. The rich man’s agony far exceeds the misery poor Lazarus ever experienced in earthy life, while the bliss of Lazarus far exceeds the pleasure the rich man had ever known. The rich man is not condemned because he is rich, but because he showed a cold-hearted disregard for the needs of others that wealth often produces (Deut 15,7-11; Isa 58,6-7). The great truth is that if the sinner chooses to cut off from God and neighbour in this life, he chooses to be cut off in the next life too.
ஏழை லாசரும் செல்வந்தனும் என்ற உவமையின் வழியே, இயேசு வியத்தகு முரண்பாடுகளை – அதாவது, செல்வத்தையும் ஏழ்மையையும், விண்ணகத்தையும் நரகத்தையும், பரிவையும் அலட்சியத்தையும், சேர்த்துக்கொள்வதையும் விலக்குவதையும் – இணைத்துக் காட்சிப்படுத்துகின்றார். இவ்வர்ணனையில் இந்த உலகவாழ்வில் உள்ள வேறுபாடுகள் நிலைவாழ்வில் உள்ள வேறுபாடுகளோடு முரண்படுகின்றன என்பதை அறியலாம். செல்வந்தன் இவ்வாழ்வின் இன்பங்களை அனுபவித்து மகிழ்ந்தான். ஏழை லாசரோ உடல் ரீதியிலும் பொருளாதாரமின்றியும் இன்னல் அடைந்தார். ஆனால், இறப்பிற்குப்பின் அவர்களின் நிலைமைகள் வியத்தகு முறையில் மாறியிருந்தன. செல்வந்தன் மிகுந்த வேதனைகளை அனுபவித்தான், ஏழை லாசர் ஆபிரகாமின் மடியில் மகிழ்ந்திருந்தார். செல்வந்தனின்; வேதனையோ ஏழை லாசரின் இவ்வுலக துன்பங்களைவிட அதிகமாய் இருந்தது. அதே போல், லாசரின் நிலைவாழ்வின் மகிழ்ச்சியோ செல்வந்தன் இவ்வுலக வாழ்வில் அனுபவித்ததைவிட மிகுதியாய் இருந்தது. செல்வந்தன் தண்டிக்கப்பட காரணம், அவன் மிகுந்த செல்வம் கொண்டிருந்ததால் அல்ல, மாறாக செல்வச் செழிப்பின் அகங்காரத்தில் மற்றவர்களின் தேவைகளை கண்டும் மனமிரங்காமல் அசட்டையாக செயல்பட்டதே. இவ்வுவமையில் அடங்கிய மிகப்பெரிய உண்மை, பாவிகள் கடவுளின் உறவையும் அடுத்திருப்பவர்களின் உறவையும் துண்டித்துக் கொண்டால், மறுவாழ்வில் அவர்கள் இவ்விரு உறவுகளிலிருந்து கட்டாயம் வெட்டிவிடப்படுவர்.
