25.06.2019 — Let love seek justice for others

*12th Week in Ord. Time, Tuesday – 25th June 2019 — Gospel: Mt 7,6.12-14*
*Let love seek justice for others *
Everyone adores the Golden Rule “treat other people just as you would like to be treated by them” (Mt 7,12). But putting it into practice seems a herculean task. The sentence begins with “therefore” connecting it back to what has gone before. The underlying logic is that if God the Father works for the ultimate good of all who seek him, then his children must work the ultimate good of others. Jesus says that this one rule sums up the law and the prophets. Similar teachings are found in other Jewish literature. Torah offers a similar command, “Love your neighbour as yourself” (Lev 19,18). But before the time of Jesus, this was the only place where this command was stated positively. A negative form of this command is found in Tob 4,15, “what you hate, do not do to anyone” and Confucius also says similarly, “Never do to others what you would not like them to do you.” In a way, to refrain from harming others is not at all that difficult, all it requires is inaction. The passive person may not do any harm to his fellow human beings. On the other hand, positive action requires self-sacrifice. And Jesus reminds ourselves to be other-centered and do the duty of justice towards other people. The only way we can fulfill Jesus’ Golden Rule is to have the love of God burning in our hearts, as Apostle Paul says, “love of Christ urges on” (2 Cor 5,14).
