Facing Makarism
Jesus’ attack on his critics in the preceding controversy receives an enthusiastic response. The woman in the crowd could not restrain her admiration of Jesus and of his mother. This praise recalls Elizabeth’s exclamation (1,45) and echoes Mary’s words of affirmation (1,48). Such beatitudes of praising an offspring by extolling the parents and caregivers were common in the ancient world (Prov 23,24-25). Jesus deflects this flattery with a beatitude of his own (11,28). This makarism recalls Jesus’ earlier saying, ‘to hear the word of God and do it’ (8,21). Since flattery was such a common thing in antiquity, Jesus takes no comfort from this enthusiasm. He wishes to gently avoid the seduction by false praise. He is more concerned with obedience to God than with any kind of praise that may come his way. Listening to the Word of God and observing it is the best way of standing on the side of Christ against Satan (11,23) and also the best protection against falling away (11,24-25).
முந்தைய சர்ச்சையில் தனது விமர்சகர்கள் மீது இயேசு நடத்திய தாக்குதல் உற்சாகமான பதிலைப் பெறுகிறது. கூட்டத்திலிருந்த பெண்மணி எவ்வித தடங்கலுமின்றி இயேசுவையும் அவருடைய தாயையும் புகழ்ந்து போற்றுகின்றார். இப்பேறுபெற்றோரின் பாராட்டு எலிசபெத்தின் ஆச்சரியத்தை நினைவுபடுத்துகிறது (லூக் 1,45) மற்றும் மரியாள் பாடலின் சொற்களை எதிரொலிக்கிறது (லூக் 1,48). பண்டைய உலகில் பெற்றோர்களையும் பராமரிப்பவர்களையும் புகழ்ந்து பேசுவதன் மூலம் ஒரு சந்ததியைப் புகழ்ந்து பேசுவது பொதுவானது (நீதி 23,24-25). இப்புகழ்ச்சியை இயேசு மற்றொரு பேறுபெற்றோர் கூற்றால் திசை திருப்புகின்றார் (11,28). இப்பேறுபெற்றோர் கூற்று “இறைவார்த்தையைக் கேட்டு அதை செயல்படுத்துங்கள்” (8,21) என்று இயேசு முன்பு கூறியதை நினைவுபடுத்துகிறது. பழங்காலத்தில் புகழ்ச்சி என்பது ஒரு பொதுவான விடயமாக கருதியதால் இப்புகழ்ச்சியின் தூண்டுதலில் இருந்து இயேசு எந்த இன்பத்தையும் பெற விரும்பவில்லை. பொய்யான புகழ்ச்சியால் அடையும் மயக்கத்தை மெதுவாகத் தவிர்க்க விரும்பினார். தன் வழியில் வரக்கூடிய எந்த விதமான புகழையும் விட, கடவுளுக்குக் கீழ்ப்படிவதில் அவர் அதிக அக்கறை கொண்டிருந்தார். இறைவார்த்தையைக் கேட்பது அதைக் கடைப்பிடிப்பது சாத்தானுக்கு எதிராகவும் கிறிஸ்துவின் பக்கம் நிற்பதற்கான சிறந்த வழியாகும் (11,23). மேலும் இவை பாதாளத்தில் விழாமல் இருப்பதற்கான சிறந்த பாதுகாப்பாக அமையும் (11,24-25).
