32nd Week in Ord. Time, Saturday – 18th November 2023 — Lk 18,1-8
Seeking Faith
The last phrase in the parable is a question: “When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” The Gospels present numerous examples of person’s commended for their faith:
- The Centurion who believes that Jesus will heal his servant from a distance.
- The sinful woman who anoints Jesus’ feet and loves much
- The bleeding and unclean woman who touches Jesus’ clothes in the crowd
- The Samaritan leper, who returned to Jesus with gratitude
- The blind beggar who believes in Jesus to regain his sight
These and other similar stories of appreciation of Jesus pointing to individuals in faith are evident in the Gospels. Their faith is found in some unexpected places and among unpredicted persons. However, the question is about the future, that is for us, in our present time. Certainly, the expected faith may not be found among the religious professionals or righteous authorities and in the high-tech self-fulfilled society. It may be found among the outsiders, the lonely, the unclean, the ones certain of their sinfulness. Perhaps, the parable suggests that a sign of faith will be a willingness to persist in prayer, like this persisting widow to fight for justice against all odds in life.
