GOSPEL READING: MATTHEW 1:1-16,18-23

Jesus was a historical person. He had a linked with the past. He was a descendant of Abraham. And Abraham was a man of faith; he was the first historical person to believe in God and was justified for his faith. Jesus was a descendant of David as well. David was the civil leader and he gave the people a sense of a society, a nation. So Jesus was the descendant of both the faith of the past and the society of the past.

Jesus was a divine person. Mary conceived Jesus through the Holy Spirit. This was told to Joseph himself in a dream. This was the faith of Joseph. Joseph accepted it in faith. An action of God (through the Holy Spirit) when accepted in faith (Joseph) realized God with us (Jesus). A historical person (son of Abraham; son of David) became ‘God with us’ through the action of God when accepted in faith.

GOSPEL READING: LUKE 6:20-26

Jesus speaks about two groups of people: one he calls them blessed and another he condemns. The group which he calls blessed is made up of those who are poor, hungry, weeping, hated, insulted. All these are on account of Jesus. It is not any suffering that makes one blessed.

But those who are happy, filled with everything, laugh around, and praised about are in fact condemned by Jesus. One reason is that they have received their reward and also they have received not on account of Jesus. Jesus should be the criteria for anything and everything.
