14.06.2016 LIKE THE FATHER

Posted under Reflections on June 12th, 2016 by

GOSPEL READING: MATTHEW 5:43-48

‘Like the father like the son’ Jesus want this to be a reality. And that is the reason he says be perfect just as your heavenly father is. Jesus wants all his disciples to be the children of the heavenly father. Jesus was like the Father. He was the perfect revelation of the Father.

To be the children of the Father one has to love his enemies and pray for those who persecute him. He should also be equal to good and bad; and just and unjust. This how the heavenly father behaves and his children should also behave like their Father. So being perfect is to possess these above qualities in this context.

13.06.2016 DO NOT OPPOSE EVIL

GOSPEL READING: MATTHEW 5:38-42

This teaching of Jesus seems very strange to the modern world. People want to oppose evil and fight for justice. In the name of justice they are ready even to fight, upset and destroy evil. St. Paul had understood this message of Jesus rightly and that is why he says ‘overcome evil by doing good’ –Rom 12:21

Jesus gives example of doing good instead of evil. First he says don’t oppose evil (When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one to him as well); secondly he advices to return more that what is due (If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic, hand him your cloak as well); and finally he suggests to be more generous than what is required (Should anyone press you into service for one mile, 1 go with him for two miles).
