Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: JOHN 15:12-17

Jesus is addressing the disciples and he is talking to them about love, friendship, revelation etc. In this passage Jesus is giving a new meaning to being a disciple. Here he does not speak about following him and going for a mission or sending them for a mission. But if we read the gospel of John, in chapter 21, the author narrates a story in which Jesus questions Peter regarding loving him and finally tells him to follow him. So following requires love.

Jesus also speaks about the father and revealing the father to his disciples and receiving from the father whatever asked in his name. Jesus love for the disciples and his friendship with them is to reveal father. This revelation is again to benefit the disciples only (so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you).

இயேசு சீடர்களிடம் அன்பு> நட்பு> வெளிப்பாடு போன்றவைகளைப்பற்றித்தான் பேசுகிறார். பின்தொடர்தல்> பணி போன்றவைகளைப்பற்றி இங்கு பேசவில்லை. யோவான் நற்செய்தியில் அன்பு> நட்பு> வெளிப்பாடு போன்றவைதான் சீடர்களுக்கு அடையாளங்களாக இருக்கவேண்டும் என சுட்டிக்காட்டுகிறார்.

GOSPEL READING: JOHN 15:9-11

Remaining with Jesus or his love seems to be an important theme in the gospel of John. John uses the word ‘remain’ more times than all the New Testament writers put together do. For John this theme is very important. Belonging to God or to the kingdom and remain with the father are as good as saying ‘be my disciple’.

‘Love one another as I have loved you’ says Jesus. In this saying Jesus becomes the model for all his disciples. But the love must be as Jesus has loved: the word as gives more meaning to love than any other word. Here in this passage Jesus says ‘as the father loves me so I love you’. For Jesus the love of the father is the model. So anyone loves the other as Jesus loves in turn loves the other as the father loves Jesus. What a marvel!

என் தந்தை என் மீது அன்பு கொண்டுள்ளதுபோல நானும் உங்கள்மீது அன்பு கொண்டுள்ளேன். இதே இயேசு சொல்லுவார்: நான் உங்கள்மேல் அன்பு கொண்டதுபோல் நீங்கள் ஒருவர் மற்றவர்மேல் அன்பு கொள்ளவேண்டும். இதில் ‘போல’ என்பது முக்கியமானது. ‘நிலைத்திருங்கள்’ என்பதும் இந்த நற்செய்தியாளருக்கு மிகவும் முக்கியமானது. இயேசுவில் நிலைத்திருத்தல் மேலும் இயேசுவைப் போலிருத்தல் சீடத்துவத்திற்கு இன்றியமையானவை.
