GOSPEL READING: LUKE 14:15-24

Jesus has been going around Galilee summoning people to God’s great supper. The time has arrived. Those who were invited long ago must hurry up and come. Most of the have refused giving excuses. Some are delighted to be included and they are the poor and the sinners. This could be one meaning.

There is another meaning to this parable and in this meaning the expected guests are the Jews. They were waiting for the arrival of the kingdom. But when the kingdom was among them they were giving excuses. Those who accepted at the time of Luke were the early Christians.

GOSPEL READING: LUKE 14:12-14

The message of Jesus is quite strange and out form the ordinary. Meal is a time when friends and relatives come together to share and strengthen their relationship and friendship. Often meal is a sign for the others about the host’s popularity among the people of the locality. Invitations will further be strengthened by the invitation of the other.

Jesus says that invitations should be repaid by the invitees. Meals should be with the poor and the orphans and the sick so that the reward is that the poor are only helped. Certainly this is not the way the secular world will do. Jesus is presenting the kingdom where the earthly rewards are not important.
