Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: JOHN 20:24-29

Thomas refuses to believe in the resurrection of Jesus. He also refuses to accept the witnesses of the other disciples. He stands alone in front of the rest of the disciples. He also formulates conditions to believe in Jesus. This is very strange especially from a disciple who had lived with him for three years and seen all the miracles and heard all his teaching and preaching.

Jesus comes down in this case and allows himself to be seen by the disciple (Thomas). He allows himself to be as Thomas wants. Jesus lets himself to be according to the desire of the disciple. But he warns him that he will not be doing so with everyone who requests a revelation. Those who believe in Jesus without any requests and demands are blessed.

தோமா இயேசுவோடு பல ஆண்டுகள் வாழ்ந்;தும் அவருடைய போதனைகளை கேட்டும் அவர் செய்யும் புதுமைகளை கண்டும்@ அவரைப்பற்றிய சாட்சியங்களை கேட்டும் நம்பவில்லை. தனக்கு நடந்தால் ஒழிய நம்ப முடியாது என்று இருக்கிறார் தோமா. (இதுபோல் நாமும் இருக்கிறோம்). தனக்கு புதுமைகள் நடக்காத போதும் தான் விரும்பியது நடக்காத போதும் நம்புவதே சிறந்தது.

GOSPEL READING: MATTHEW 8: 28-34

Jesus was on the other side of the lake. There were Jews but lived among the pagans. The pagans had pigs to grow, because pigs were unclean animals for the Jews. Jesus has already shown his authority over sicknesses and the nature. Now the author was trying to show that Jesus had power over the spirits as well. Even the unclean spirits recognized him as the son of God.

This story also was an attack on the Sadducees who did not believe in the spirit. They believed in only what one could see. Spirits could not be seen and hence they did not exist for them. The author by giving this story proved to them that the spirit existed. Because the demons entered into the pigs and were destroyed. Spirits moved out of these men too.

இயேசு வியாதிகளிடமிருந்து மக்களுக்கு விடுதலை கொடுத்தார். இயற்கை மீதும் அவருக்கு அதிகாரம் இருந்தது. தீய ஆவிகள் மீதும் அவருக்கு அதிகாரம் இருந்தது என்பதை இந்த கதை வழியாக ஆசிரியர் முன்வைக்கிறார். சதுசேயர்கள் ஆவிகள் இருப்பதை நம்பவில்லை. ஆவிகளை பார்க்க முடியாது ஆகவே ஆவிகள் இல்லை என்று சொன்னார்கள். பன்றிகளின் அழிவு வழியாக ஆவிகள் இருக்கின்றன என்பது நிருபிக்கப் படுகிறது.
