Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: MATTHEW 7:6.12-14

Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the law and the prophets.

Bible always invites its readers (also listeners) to worship the only true God. It also tells the readers to love the neighbours. These two always go hand in hand. While love of God is unique and unequivocal the second commandment is widely interpreted. Prophetic books and particularly the books of Amos and Hosea speak a lot about the service to neighbours.

In the New Testament we see the passages where we are called to love others as we love ourselves. Jesus says “love one another as I have loved” and there are similar saying. Here by saying “Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the law and the prophets” Jesus speaks of equality among his followers.

ஆகையால் பிறர் உங்களுக்குச் செய்ய வேண்டும் என விரும்புகிறவற்றை எல்லாம் நீங்களும் அவர்களுக்குச் செய்யுங்கள். இறைவாக்குகளும் திருச்சட்டமும் கூறுவது இதுவே.

இறைவாக்குகளும் திருச்சட்டமும் இஸ்ராயேல் மக்களின் மதத்தின் அடித்தளங்களாக இருந்தன. இவைகளை வாழ்ந்து காட்டுவதுதான் எல்லாமே. விருப்பங்களும் செயல்களும் நம்மை ஒருவர் மற்றவரோடு ஒன்றினைக்கச் செய்யவேண்டும். இதுவே வேதம்.

GOSPEL READING: LUKE 1:57-66.80

“What, then, will this child be?” For surely the hand of the Lord was with him. The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the desert until the day of his manifestation to Israel.

Birth of John the Baptist was a miracle worked by God. This miracle was known to Zacharias, his wife Elizabeth and Mary the Mother of Jesus. Only they were informed about it rather it was revealed to them. Probably the neighbours and friends did not know about it (Zacharias was silenced and hence he could not reveal this fact).

This miracle was further confirmed by an accompanying miracle: the return of speech to Zacharias. Now Zacharias could tell his neighbours the things that happened to him in the temple. Naming the child was a further confirmation of the miracle. For the names reveals the character of the person. Here the name did not have any link with the past. It has no human link of the past but a divine intervention.

‘இக்குழந்தை எப்படிப்பட்டதாக இருக்குமோ?” என்று சொல்லிக் கொண்டார்கள். ஏனெனில் அக்குழந்தை ஆண்டவருடைய கைவன்மையைப் பெற்றிருந்தது. குழந்தையாயிருந்த யோவான் வளர்ந்து மனவலிமை பெற்றார். இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களுக்குத் தம்மை வெளிப்படுத்தும் காலம் வரை அவர் பாலை நிலத்தில் வாழ்ந்து வந்தார்.

திருமுழுக்கு யோவானின் பிறப்பு ஒரு புதுமை. அது ஒரு இறைசெயல். அக்குழந்தைக்கு பெயர் வைப்பதும் ஒரு புதுமையே. பெயர் தந்தையின் வாயை திறந்தது (அவர் பேசினார்). பெயரும் இறை திட்டத்தை வெளிப்படுத்தியது. குழந்தைக்கும் அதன் முன்னோர்களுக்கும் தொடர்பு இல்லை. குழந்தை கடவுளின் புதுப்படைப்பாக இருக்கிறது. ஏனெனில் அக்குழந்தை ஆண்டவருடைய கைவன்மையைப் பெற்றிருந்தது. பாலை நிலத்தில் (இறை அனுபவத்தில்) வாழ்ந்து வந்தார்.
