GOSPEL READING: Matthew 2:1-12

Behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem

The magi arrived in Jerusalem and went straight to the king and asked him about the new born king. In Luke’s Gospel the angel appeared to the shepherds and told them about the child and they went straight to the manger and found the child as the angel had told them.

The magi who study the signs and stars follow their learning. They are not simple enough like the shepherds to find the new born king in a simple place. They arrive and go straight to the king. They are controlled by their learning and culture that they could not see the king out the context of the palace.

கிழக்கிலிருந்து ஞானிகள் எருசலேமுக்கு வந்து

ஞானிகள் தாங்கள் படித்ததை முன்வைக்கிறார்கள். படிப்பினால் கிடைத்த செய்தியை நம்பி, கலாச்சாரத்திற்கு கட்டுப்பட்டவர்களாய் ய+தர்களின் அரசராகப் பிறந்திருக்கிறவரைத் தேடி அரண்மனைக்குச் செல்லுகிறார்கள். அறிவு, கலாச்சாரம் நம்மை கட்டுப்படுத்துகிறது. இறைசார்ந்த உண்மைகள் வெளிபாட்டில்தான் கிடைக்கிறது. (இடையர்களுக்கு வானதூதர்கள் வழியாக; ஞானிகளுக்கு மறைநூல் வழியாக).

GOSPEL READING: John 1:43-51

“Come and see.”

When the disciples asked Jesus about his whereabouts he answered them saying “Come and see.” He told the disciples to have their own experiences of him and his life. Personal experience is a must to follow Jesus. Without the personal experience the following would be difficult.

The same model is followed by his disciple Philip when he calls a new follower. Philip also tells him to “Come and see.” So for following Jesus as his disciples a personal experience is what is required. One does not follow Jesus because of his own desire or wish. Even if he follows because he desires yet it needs to be accompanied by personal experience of Jesus. This is formation to be a disciple.

‘வந்து பாருங்கள்”

‘வந்து பாருங்கள்” என்பது இயேசுவின் சீடராவதற்கு அடித்தளமானது. இயேசு அனுபவம் இல்லை என்றால் இயேசுவை பின்செல்லுதலும் இல்லை. இதே அனுபதிற்குத்தான் சீடர்களும் மற்ற சீடர்களை அழைக்கிறார்கள். பிலிப்பு நத்தனியேலைப் போய்ப் பார்த்து, அவரிடம் பேசிய பிறகு ‘வந்து பாரும்” என்றுதான் கூறினார்.
