Breaking the Word

Gospel Reading: Mt 21:33-43, 45-46

In this parable, Jesus speaks about a vineyard. The listeners particularly the Jews will immediately get the context. They know that it reflects the people of Israel (Is 5). God has chosen Israel to bear fruit. They were supposed to reveal God to the people. They were not chosen for a privilege but for a mission. The mission was to bear fruit and the fruit was supposed to be for the other people.

The leaders of the people of Israel refused to give the fruit to the workers whom the owner sends. Instead they beat up the workers; they kill them and stone them. The disrespect to the workers was disrespect to the owner. This is clearly seen in their treatment to the son of the owner. The people of Israel, particularly the leaders played the role of the owner and not the role of tenants and that is where they are punished. The owner (son of the owner) always remains the corner stone.

இயேசு இந்த உவமை வழியாக இஸ்ராயேல் மக்களைப் பற்றியும் அவர்களுடைய தேர்வு, தேர்வு நிமித்தம் அவர்களுக்கு கொடுக்கப்படுகின்ற பணியைப் பற்றியும் பேசுகிறார். இஸ்ராயேல் மக்கள் திராட்சை தோட்டமாய் (எசா 5) தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டது கனிதரவே. அதாவது இறைவன் இருக்கிறார் என்பதை வெளிப்படுத்தவே. அந்த கனியைப் பெறத்தான் பணியாளர்கள் (இறைவாக்கினர்) அனுப்பப்படுகிறார்கள். ஆனால் இஸ்ராயல் மக்களின் தலைவர்கள் பணியாளர்களைத் துன்புறுத்துகிறார்கள் (கனி தர – இறைவனை வெளிப்படுத்த – மறுக்கிறார்கள்). தோட்ட உரிமையாளர் (அவருடைய மகனும்) தலைவர்களைத் தண்டிக்கிறார்கள். உரிமையாளர், அவரது மகன்தானே மூலைக்கல். இறைவனே எல்லாவற்றிக்கும் அடித்தளம் என்பதை வெளிப்படுத்துவதே நமது பணியும் கூட.

Gospel Reading: Lk 16:19-31 

Jesus is telling a story with two acts and two scenes. In the first act of the story, Jesus is presenting an earthly scene. The rich man is closed in purple dress and fine linen. He is feasting everyday. He is always presented in the dinning room, whereas the poor man Lazarus sitting at the gate (outside the house). He has no food and he is begging and dogs are around him.

The second act of the story, Jesus is presenting a heavenly scene. The poor man is carried by the angels whereas the rich man was buried in the bosom of the earth(soil). The poor man Lazarus is in the bosom of Abraham and he is inside the house whereas the rich man is far outside the heavenly realities (there is an abyss between them). The rich man is longing for water to quench his thirst and he is longing for comfort.

So the difference between the heavenly realities and the earthly realities is so shown by the wealth one posses or not and much more with the attitude that one has with regard to the wealth. The attitude should be one of sharing. If there is no sharing in the earthly scene, there is no heavenly scene for him.

இயேசு இந்த உவமையில் உலக நடப்பைப் பற்றியும், விண்ணக நிகழ்வைப் பற்றியும் பேசுகிறார். உலக நடப்பிலே ஏழை, பணக்காரன் என்ற பிரிவு இருக்கிறது. ஆனால் பணக்காரனிடம் பகிர்வு மனப்பான்மை இல்லை. விண்ணக நிகழ்விலே பகிர்வு மனப்பான்மை இல்லாதவனுக்கு இடமில்லை: குடிக்க நீருமில்லை> ஆதரவு அளிக்க ஆட்கள் இல்லை (அபிரகாம்). மண்ணக பகிர்வே விண்ணகத்திற்கு உயர்வு.
