*Second Week of Advent, Thursday — 13th December 2018 — Gospel: Mathew 11, 11-15 *
*JOHN, THE PROMISED ELIJAH *
At the conclusion of the era of God’s prophets, Jesus solemnly praises John the Baptist, the last of all prophets. Here his pronouncement about John’s greatness, affirmed twice, becomes emphatic with the mention of the word ‘truly’. Indeed, Jesus claims not only his divinity, but his authority over the intimate, personal, and firsthand knowledge about John the Baptist. John’s towering role as the apex of the old covenant and the herald of the new is recognized by Jesus on the level of human (born of women) and spiritual (kingdom of heaven) standards. And in terms of the messianic age, Jesus finds fulfillment of the promise in John. Thus he declares, as the climactic end of the Torah and the prophets, John did function best in preparation for God’s reign, in the role of Elijah whose return was expected (Mal 3,1.25).
இறைவாக்கினர்களின் நிறைவு காலத்தில் இறுதி இறைவாக்கினராம் திருமுழுக்கு யோவானை இயேசு பெருமைபடுத்தி புகழ்கின்றார். இப்பகுதியில் இருமுறை அவருடைய மேன்மையை ‘ உறுதி”பட வலியுறுத்துகின்றார். முதலில் இயேசு தன்னுடைய தெய்வீகத்தைவிட திருமுழுக்கு யோவானைப் பற்றிய தனிப்பட்ட, நெருங்கிய, உண்மை அறிவை அதிகாரத்தோடு அறிவிக்கின்றார். பின்னர் அவர் யோவானை உடலளிவிலும் (பெண்ணிடம் பிறந்தவராக) ஆன்மீக அளவிலும் (விண்ணரசின் சாட்சியாக) மதிப்பிட்டு இவரே பழைய உடன்படிக்கை மற்றும் புதிய நற்செய்தியின் சிகரம் என்பதை கண்டுணர்கிறார். மேலும், மெசியாவின் வருகை காலத்தில் திருமுழுக்கு யோவானே இறைவாக்குறுதியை நிறைவேற்றுபவராகவும் காண்கிறார். எனவே, இந்நாட்களில் திருச்சட்டங்களையும் இறைவாக்கினர்களையும் நிறைவு செய்பவரான யோவான் இறையரசுக்கான தயாரிப்பில் மக்கள் ஆவலோடு எதிர்பார்த்திருந்த எலியாவின் கதாபாத்திரத்தை சிறப்பாக நிகழ்த்திக் காட்டியிருக்கிறார் என இயேசு அவரைக் குறித்து அறிவிக்கின்றார்.
