*Christmas Weekday, Thursday – 10th January 2019 — **Gospel: Luke 4,14-22*
*Inauguration of the era of fulfilment*
The synagogues are the places where the Jewish people assembled for prayer, Scripture reading, instruction and discussion. It is the natural setting for Jesus to present his teachings. In his hometown of Nazareth, we see an example of the kind of teaching Jesus is offering in the synagogue. He sees his own ministry as a natural completion of Judaism’s hope, so he desires all Jews to enter into this time of fulfilment. In what he read from the scroll of the prophet Isaiah, the anointed Servant of God announces release to all those in bondage (Is 61,1-2). This prophetic deliverance is made specific for four different groups: the poor, the captives, the blind and the oppressed. Their liberation echoes the exodus from Egypt and the return from Babylon, but the era of Jesus would be much greater than the past. Therefore, the Jews of Jesus time began to understand through his reading that the coming of God’s new age of salvation is taking place here and now, before their eyes.
