*Christmas Weekday, Saturday – 12th January 2019 — **Gospel: John 3,22-30*
*John lets Jesus ascend*
In John’s gospel, for the last time John the Baptist appears to bear witness to the work of Jesus in the world. It seems that John and Jesus are now both baptizing, but in different locations (3,22-23). John the Baptist declares that he is the friend of the bridegroom. He rejoices when the groom summons him to the festivities and stands ready to do the groom’s bidding (3,29). In view of the OT texts in which Israel is the bride of God, John is here announcing that Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah. The transition from John to Jesus marks the defining moment of the history of salvation, the movement from the era of the prophets to that of the Messiah. John knows that his purpose has been to elevate Jesus (3,30). With Jesus on the ascendancy, John knows it is time for his own work to come to a close.
யோவான் நற்செய்தியில் இயேசுவின் பணிக்கு இறுதி முறையாக திருமுழுக்கு யோவான் சாட்சியம் பகர்கின்றார். இருவரும் வெவ்வேறு இடங்களில் இப்பொழுது திருமுழுக்குக் கொடுக்கிறார்கள். யோவான் தான் மணமகனின் நண்பன் என்று வெளிப்படுத்துகிறார். மணமகன் அவரை விருந்துக்கு அழைக்கும் போதும் அவருக்கு பணிவிடை செய்யும் போதும் மகிழ்ச்சியடைகின்றார். பழைய ஏற்பாட்டு நூல்களின் பார்வையில், இஸ்ரயேல் கடவுளின் மணப்பெண்ணாக இருப்பது போல, இயேசு நீண்ட காலமாக எதிர்பார்க்கப்பட்ட மெசியா என்று யோவான் அறிவிக்கின்றார். யோவானிடமிருந்து இயேசுவுக்கு முன்னேறும் நிலை இறைவாக்கினர்களிடமிருந்து மெசியாவை மையப்படுத்தி மீட்பின் வரலாற்றை வரையறுக்கும் நேரத்தைக் குறிக்கிறது. யோவானின் குறிக்கோள் இயேசுவை மேன்மையாக காட்டுவதே. இவ்வாறு இயேசு உயர்ந்து செல்லும் நிலையில் யோவான் தன்னுடைய பணியின் நேரம் நிறைவுக்கு வருகிறது என்பதை அறிந்து கொண்டார்.
