*4th Week in Ord. Time, Friday – 08th February 2019 — Gospel: Mark 6,14-29*
*Emphasizing Cost of Discipleship*
Since the reputation of Jesus has spread far and wide, and because of the successful mission of the twelve, many are confused about the identity of Jesus. They brought into their memory renowned personages of the recent past, John raised from the dead or of the remote past, Elijah returned from heaven. The narrative is told in a way that highlights the similarities between John the Baptist and Elijah. Herod, who fears John and resents him, resembles King Ahab, the ancient king of Israel, in his attitude towards Elijah. Herodias, who plots ways to be rid of John, resembles Jezebel, Ahab’s wife, who hated Elijah and wanted to put him to death. Like Elijah, the prophet before him, John spoke the truth to power and willingly suffered the consequences. This account demonstrates that John is the prophet like Elijah who heralded the coming of the Messiah. The account of John’s death is inserted into the gospel after the twelve are sent forth on mission and before their return. In this way, the gospel emphasizes the cost of discipleship and anticipates the ongoing mission of the disciples after the death of Jesus.
இயேசுவின் புகழ் எத்திக்கும் பரவியதால், மேலும் பன்னிருவரின் வெற்றிகரமான பணியினால் அநேக மக்கள் இயேசுவின் அடையாளத்தைப் பற்றிக் குழம்பிப் போயிருந்தார்கள். ஒருவேளை சமீபத்தில் கொல்லப்பட்ட திருமுழுக்கு யோவான் உயிர்த்தெழுந்திருக்கலாம் அல்லது முந்திய காலத்து எலியா விண்ணகத்திலிருந்து திரும்பி வந்திருக்கலாம் என்று மக்கள் மிகவும் போற்றத்தக்க இறைவாக்கினர்களை தங்கள் எண்ணங்களில் நினைவு கூர்ந்தார்கள். அதற்கேற்றாற் போல் இவ்வர்ணனையும் எலியா மற்றும் திருமுழுக்கு யோவான் இவர்களுக்கு இடையே உள்ள ஒற்றுமைகளைச் சுட்டிக் காட்டுகிறது. ஏரோது யோவானுக்கு அஞ்சி, அவர் மேல் ஆத்திரமடைவது இஸ்ரயேலின் அரசன் ஆகாபு எலியாவிடம் நடந்து கொண்ட மனநிலையோடு ஒத்திருக்கின்றது. யோவானை ஒழிக்க சதித்திட்டம் தீட்டிய ஏரோதியாள், எலியாவை வெறுத்து கொலை செய்ய முற்பட்ட ஆகாபின் மனைவி ஈசபேலோடு ஒத்திருக்கின்றாள். முற்காலத்து இறைவாக்கினர் எலியாவைப் போன்று யோவானும் அதிகாரத்திற்கு எதிராக உண்மையை உரக்கக்கூறி அதற்காக எல்லாத் துன்பங்களையும் ஏற்றுக் கொண்டார். இவ்வர்ணனை இறைவாக்கினர் எலியாவைப் போன்று யோவானும் மெசியாவின் வருகையை முன்னறிவித்தார் என்று நிரூபிக்கிறது. இச்சிறப்பு மிக்க யோவானின் இறப்பு நிகழ்வு பன்னிரு சீடர்கள் பணிக்கு அனுப்பப்பட்ட பின்னும், அவர்கள் பணியிலிருந்து திரும்புவதற்கு முன்னும் இடைச்செருகளாக புகுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. இவ்வாறு சீடத்துவத்தின் வெகுமதிக்கு அழுத்தம் கொடுக்கவும், இயேசுவின் இறப்பிற்குப்பின் சீடர்கள் செய்ய வேண்டிய பணியை எதிர்நோக்கவும் இந்நற்செய்திப் பகுதி அமைந்திருக்கின்றது.
