Knowing his disciples are still confused, Jesus continues to teach by asking them a series of questions, each of which in some way refers back to his feedings of the Jews and the Gentiles. In both of the feeding accounts, there was an inadequate amount of bread and a great need to feed a large crowd. Yet, on both occasions the presence of Jesus enabled the disciples to feed the crowds to satisfaction with plenty of left over. How, then, can the disciples imagine that their one loaf of bread could not supply their needs when Jesus is with them? The fact that the disciples had distributed bread at each feeding makes their lack of understanding inexcusable. Like the Pharisees, their hearts have become hardened and they have closed their eyes and ears to who Jesus is and what he is able to do. Jesus rebukes them for their hard heartedness. If they had twelve baskets of fragments left when feeding the Jewish crowd and seven large baskets left when feeding the Gentiles, then surely they must understand that the little they have is more than enough in his presence.
சீடர்களின் குழப்பங்களை நன்கு அறிந்து கொண்ட இயேசு அவர்களிடம் தொடர்ச்சியான கேள்விகளைக் கேட்டு தொடர்ந்து போதிக்கிறார். இக்கேள்விகளில் யூதர்களுக்கும் பிறஇனத்தாருக்கும் அற்புதமாய் உணவளித்த நிகழ்வினை மீண்டும் நினைவுபடுத்துகின்றார். இவ்விரண்டு நிகழ்வுகளிலும், போதிய அளவு அப்பம் இல்லாத நிலையில் ஒரு பெரிய கூட்டத்திற்கே உணவளிக்க வேண்டிய அவசியம் ஏற்பட்டது. அதே போன்று இயேசுவின் உடனிருப்பு சீடர்களை உற்சாகப்படுத்தி கூடியிருந்த மக்கள் கூட்டத்திற்கு நிறைவாய் உணவளிக்கவும் மிகுதியானதை சேர்த்துவைக்கவும் தூண்டியது. இவற்றை இயேசுவுடன் இருந்து அனுபவித்த சீடர்கள், எப்படி ஒரு துண்டு அப்பத்திலிருந்து எல்லாருக்கும் நிறைவாக உண்ணக் கொடுக்க முடியும் என்று சந்தேகப்படலாம்? அப்பங்களைப் பகிர்ந்தளிக்கும் ஒவ்வொரு நிகழ்விலும் சீடர்களே மக்களுக்கு நேரடியாக விநியோகித்திருந்தும் அவர்களின் புரிந்துகொள்ள முடியாத தன்மை அவமதிப்புக்கு காரணமாகிறது. பரிசேயர்களைப் போல, சீடர்களின் இதயமும் கடினமாகி விட்டது. அதனால், இயேசு யார்? எவ்வளவு சக்தி வாய்ந்தவர்? என்பதை உணர்ந்து கொள்ளமுடியாமல் தங்களுடைய கண்களையும் காதுகளையும் மூடிக்கொண்டார்கள். எனவே, அவர்களின் கடினமனதுக்காக இயேசு அவர்களைக் கடிந்து கொள்கிறார். யூதர்களுக்கு உணவளித்ததில் பன்னிரெண்டு கூடைகளும், பிறஇனத்தவர்க்கு உணவளித்ததில் ஏழு கூடைகளும் மிகுதியாய் பெற்றதில் அவர்கள் புரிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டியது ஒன்று தான்: எவ்வளவு மிகச்சிறிய அளவில் தம்மிடம் இருந்தாலும் இயேசுவின் பிரசன்னம் மட்டுமே போதும் அவற்றை இன்னும் மிகுதியாக்க என்பதே.
