The question of Jesus’ true identity is the central question of the gospel. This question bounds off the pages of history and seeks personal response, from the heart of every reader of the gospel at all times. Until now the gospel narrator portrayed Jesus as a teacher and forgiving healer with divine authority, the bridegroom, the Lord of the Sabbath, the sower of God’s word, the great physician, and the shepherd who feeds God’s people. His teaching in parables and his great deeds have both revealed and concealed his true identity. While the crowds recognized him as a man of the past, yet he also met with persistent resistance and continual misunderstanding from the Jewish authorities and elders. The crowds compared him with the greatest of the prophets, John the Baptist, Elijah and Jeremiah. Still his true identity as Messiah, which was confessed by Peter was neither revealed to the people nor to his disciples. Although Peter has the right words, but he is only at the beginning, for he immediately slips and falls in his understanding. A full understanding of Jesus cannot occur until the end, until the climax of the gospel in the passion account. The suffering and death of Jesus enables his followers to answer this fundamental question.
‘இயேசுவின் உண்மை அடையாளம் என்ன?’ என்ற கேள்வியே நற்செய்தியின் மையமாகும். இக்கேள்விக்கான பதில் வரலாற்றுப் பக்கங்களைத் தாண்டி எல்லாக் காலத்திலும் தனிநபர் பதிலை ஒவ்வொரு வாசகரின் இதயத்திலிருந்தும் தேடுகிறது. இதுவரை நற்செய்தியாளர் இயேசுவை ஓர் அதிகாரப்பூர்வ ஆசிரியராகவும், மன்னித்து குணமளிப்பவராகவும், மணமகனாகவும், ஓய்வுநாளின் இறைவனாகவும், இறைவார்த்தையை விதைப்பவராகவும், பெரிய மருத்துவராகவும், உணவளிக்கும் சிறந்த ஆயனாகவும் சித்தரித்துள்ளார். அவருடைய போதனைகளும் மகத்தான செயல்களும் அவருடைய உண்மையான அடையாளத்தை வெளிப்படுத்தியும் மறைத்தும் வைத்திருக்கின்றன என்றால் அது மிகையாகாது. அவரைப் பின் தொடர்ந்து வந்த மக்கள் கூட்டம் அவரைக் கடந்தகால மனிதர்களில் ஒருவராகவே கண்டு கொண்டனர். அதாவது, திருமுழுக்கு யோவான், எலியா, எரேமியா போன்ற பெரிய தீர்க்கதரிசிகளோடு ஒப்பிட்டனர்; ஆனால், யூதத்தலைவர்களும் மூப்பர்களும் அவரைத் தவறாகப் புரிந்து கொண்டதோடு பல எதிர்ப்புகளையும் வெளிப்படையாகக் காட்டினர். இருப்பினும் பேதுரு வெளிப்படுத்திய ‘இயேசுவே மெசியா’ என்ற உண்மை அடையாளம் இதுவரை மக்களுக்கும் சீடர்களுக்கும் வெளிப்படுத்தப்படவில்லை. பேதுருவின் பதில் சரியான அடையாளத்தை வெளிப்படுத்தினாலும் அது ஒரு சிறு தொடக்கம் தான், உடனே அவர் தனது புரிதலிலிருந்து சறுக்கி விழுகின்றார். நற்செய்தியின் இறுதிவரை அதாவது இயேசுவின் பாடுகளையும் மரணத்தையும் சந்திக்கும் வரை இயேசுவைப் பற்றிய முழுமையான புரிதல் கிடைக்காது. இயேசுவைப் பின்பற்றுகின்றவர்களுக்கும் இயேசுவின் இறுதிநிலைகளே அவரைப்பற்றி எழுப்பப்பட்ட அடிப்படை கேள்விக்கு பதிலாகும்.
