As Jesus continues to teach his close disciples about the kind of service they must offer to others, John discovers someone who was expelling demons in Jesus name. John and other disciples feel that exorcism in the name of Jesus is their prerogative and they are irritated. They ask the man to stop but he refused. The disciples’ opposition to the successful exorcist is striking especially in light of their recent failure to cast out an evil spirit (9,18). They go to Jesus and complain. Jesus reproves his disciples saying, “Do not stop him”, and insists that “whoever is not against us is for us”. This account echoes the incident in the book of Numbers when Joshua noticed that two men were employing the gift of prophecy though they had not been among the seventy elders officially commissioned with the spirit of Moses. Joshua requests Moses to stop them, but Moses replied, “Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the Lord’s people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his spirit on them!” (Num 11,24-30). Like Moses, Jesus directs his disciples to have an open mind and heart towards those who are not within the formal bounds of the community. Jesus pictures the openness of God who refuses to be captured by elitist or exclusive groups.
இயேசு தம்முடைய நெருங்கிய சீடர்களுக்கு பிறர்நலச் சேவையை எவ்வாறு செய்ய வேண்டும் என்பதைக் கற்பித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கையில், இயேசுவின் பெயரால் ஒருவன் பேய்கள் ஓட்டுவதை யோவான் கண்டார். யோவானும் மற்ற சீடர்களும் இயேசுவின் பெயரால் பேய் ஓட்டுவது அவருடைய சீடர்களுக்கே உரித்தான தனிச்சிறப்பு என்பதால் அவன்மேல் எரிச்சல் அடைந்தனர். அவர்கள் பேய் ஓட்டிய மனிதனை நிறுத்தக் கூறியபோது அவன் மறுப்பு தெரிவித்தான். வெற்றிகரமாக பேயோட்டுபவரை சீடர்கள் தடுத்து நிறுத்திய இந்நிகழ்வு இதற்கு முந்தைய நிகழ்வில் சீடர்கள் தீயஆவி ஓட்டுவதில் தோல்வியடைந்ததை ஒத்துள்ளது. இயேசுவிடம் சென்று அவர்கள் முறையிடுகின்றார்கள். சீடர்களைக் கடிந்து கொண்ட இயேசு “அவனைத் தடுக்காதீர்கள்”, மேலும் “நமக்கு எதிராக இராதவர் நம் சார்பாக இருக்கிறார்” என்று ஆதரவு அளித்தார். இச்சம்பவம் எண்ணிக்கை நூலில் மோசேயின் ஆவியால் நியமிக்கப்பட்ட எழுபது மூப்பர்களைச் சாராத இருவர் இறைவாக்கு உரைக்கும்போது யோசுவா கண்டதை எதிரொலிக்கிறது. யோசுவா மோசேயிடம் இவர்களின் செயலை தடுத்து நிறுத்தச் சொல்லிக் கேட்டுக்கொண்டார். அதற்கு மோசே “என்னை முன்னிட்டு நீ பொறாமைப்படுகிறாயா? ஆண்டவரின் மக்கள் அனைவருமே இறைவாக்கினராகும்படி ஆண்டவர் அவர்களுக்குத் தம் ஆவியை அளிப்பது எத்துணைச் சிறப்பு” என்று மறுமொழி கூறினார். மோசேயைப் போலவே முறையான வரம்புகளுக்குள் அல்லது குழுவிற்குள் இல்லாதவர்களை திறந்த மனத்துடனும் இதயத்துடனும் இயேசுவின் சீடர்கள் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள வழிநடத்துகின்றார் இயேசு. இவ்வாறு தனிச்சிறப்பு வாய்ந்த குழுக்கள் அல்லது உயர்ந்தோர் பிடியில் சிறைப்படுத்தப;படுவதை மறுக்கும் இறைவனின் வெளிப்படைத்தன்மையை படம்பிடித்துக் காட்டுகிறார் இயேசு.
