*Thursday after Ash Wednesday – 7th March 2019 — Gospel: Lk 9,22-25*
*His suffering is the hope of glory *
The road to glory runs through the cross. Jesus tells his disciples that he must undergo great suffering, rejection and death, which he sees as integral to his mission. Jesus’ life of passion on earth (9,22) invites his followers to make a conscious choice courageously and selflessly. Obviously, He enlightens them of the consequences it entails (9,24-25). Following Jesus, “the Messiah of God”, is more demanding than believing in one who can heal the sick, cast out demons, raise the dead, calm storms and multiply food. The cost of discipleship is to follow in His way: take up the cross “daily”. Jesus wants his disciples to be clear that following him is a matter of a day-by-day expression of perseverance, steadfastness and faithfulness. Only those who lose their own lives, through self-denial and cross-bearing, will receive life and find salvation. In the midst of what seems to be failure, God is at work in Jesus. In his weakness is his strength. In his humble humanity is his divine mission. Despite its difficulties, the life of a disciple is to live in the hope of glory.
மகிமைக்குரிய பாதை சிலுவையின் வழியே செல்கிறது. பாடுகள், நிராகரிப்பு, மரணம் இவற்றை முழுமையாக இவ்வாழ்வில் தாம் அனுபவிக்க வேண்டும் என்பதை தம் சீடர்களிடம் எடுத்துக் கூறுகின்றார். இவ்வனுபவங்கள் அவருடைய பணியோடு ஒருங்கிணைந்ததாக உணர்ந்திருந்தார். இயேசுவினுடைய இவ்வுலகப் பாடுகளைத் தெரிந்து கொண்டோர் தைரியமாகவும் தன்னலமற்றவராகவும் அவரைத் தெரிவு செய்து பின்பற்றிட அழைப்பு விடுக்கின்றார். அதே வேளையில், இப்பாடுகளின் பின்விளைவுகளையும் ஒளிரச் செய்கின்றார். நோய்களை குணப்படுத்துதல், தீய ஆவியை வெளியேற்றல், இறந்தவர்களை உயிரோடு எழுப்புதல், புயலை அடக்குதல், உணவு பழுகச் செய்தல் போன்ற செயல்களின் வல்லவரை நம்புவதைவிட கடவுளின் மெசியாவான இயேசுவைப் பின்தொடர்தல் என்பது மிகுந்த சவால் நிறைந்ததாகும். சீடத்துவ பண்பின் சிறப்பம்சம் அன்றாட சிலுவைகளை ஏற்றுக்கொண்டு இயேசுவின் வழியில் செல்வதாகும். அவரைப் பின்பற்றுவோர் அனைவரும் ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் விடாமுயற்சியுடனும், உறுதியுடனும், நம்பிக்கையுடனும் பின்தொடரவேண்டும் என்ற தெளிவை முன் வைக்கின்றார். யாரெல்லாம் தன்னலத்தை மறந்து சிலுவையை ஏற்றுக்கொண்டு வாழ்வை இழக்கிறார்களோ அவர்கள் நிலைவாழ்வை பெற்றுக்கொண்டு மீட்பைக் கண்டடைவார்கள். இயேசுவினுடைய பணியை இறைவன் தோல்விகளுக்கு மத்தியில் தொடர்ந்து செயல்படுத்துகின்றார். அவரது பலவீனத்தில் அவரது வலிமையையும், அவரது தாழ்ச்சியான மனித உருவில் அவருடைய தெய்வீக பணியையும் காணலாம். சீடத்துவ வாழ்வு, துன்பங்களுக்கு மத்தியில், மகிமையின் நம்பிக்கையில் வாழ அழைக்கின்றது.
