*Jesus’ inclusive outreach to outcasts *
Jesus’ outreach to outcasts continues with his call to Levi at his tax booth. He creates this opportunity knowingly in order to explain his special ministry to Levi’s friends, to scribes and Pharisees. As one who has been rejected and held in low esteem in their culture, Levi seizes this chance to leave everything and follow Jesus. He holds a banquet for Jesus and invites other “tax collectors and sinners” to introduce them to Jesus. The fact that Jesus shares table fellowship with such undesirables makes the Pharisees and the scribes question the nature of his mission and the type of “kingdom” he proclaims. Their separatism is a strong contrast to the inclusive outreach of Jesus. In his response Jesus announces boldly that his mission is to heal the sick, not the healthy, and to care for the sinners, not the righteous. His goal for all people is an invitation to repentance: recognizing their need for God, reorienting their life to the priorities of God, and seeking forgiveness and salvation through God’s grace.
சுங்கவரியை வசூலிக்கும் தம் பணியிடத்திலிருந்து லேவிக்கு கிடைக்கும் அழைப்பு இயேசுவின் பணி ஒதுக்கப்பட்டவர்களோடும் எல்லைக்கு அப்பாற்பட்டவர்களோடும் தொடர்கிறது என்பதை எண்பிக்கிறது. லேவியின் நண்பர்களுடனும் மறைநூல் அறிஞர்களுடனும் பரிசேயர்களுடனும் இயேசு தம் சிறப்பான பணியை விளக்கும் நோக்கத்துடன் விரும்பி இந்த வாய்ப்பை ஏற்படுத்திக்கொண்டார். அவ்வாறே, கலாச்சாரத்தினால் நிராகரிக்கப்பட்டவராகவும் தாழ்த்தப்பட்டவராகவும் உணர்ந்த லேவியும் இந்த வாய்ப்பைப் பயன்படுத்தி தமக்குள்ள எல்லாவற்றையும் விட்டுவிட்டு இயேசுவைப் பின்தொடர்ந்தார். மேலும், இயேசுவுக்காக ஒரு மாபெரும் விருந்து படைத்தார், அதில் பாவிகளையும் வரிதண்டுவோரையும் பங்கேற்க அழைத்து இயேசுவை அவர்களுக்கு அறிமுகப்படுத்த விரும்பினார். இத்தகைய விரும்பத்தகாதவர்களுடன் உணவுத் தோழமையை இயேசு பகிர்ந்து கொள்வதால் அவருடைய பணியின் தன்மையையும் இறையாட்சியின் கொள்கையையும் பரிசேயர்களும் மறைநூல் அறிஞர்களும் கேள்விக்குட்படுத்துகிறார்கள். இவர்களின் தனிமைப்படுத்திக் கொள்ளும் நிலைக்கு எதிரானது ஒதுக்கப்பட்டோர் அனைவரையும் உள்ளடக்கும் இயேசுவின் பண்பு. இதனால் இயேசு தம் பணி ஆரோக்கியமானவருக்கு அல்ல, நோயுற்றோருக்கே என்றும்; நீதிமான்களுக்கு அல்ல, பாவிகளுக்கே என்றும் மிகத் தைரியத்துடன் அவர்களுக்கு தெளிவுபடுத்துகின்றார். இயேசுவின் ஒரே குறிக்கோள்: எல்லா மக்களையும் மனந்திரும்ப அழைப்பதே. இவர்கள் அனைவரும் இறைவனின் தேவையை உணர்ந்து, இறைவனின் முன்னுரிமைக்காக தங்கள் வாழ்க்கையை மாற்றியமைப்பதோடு, இறையருளால் மன்னிப்பையும் மீட்பையும் தேடுவதில் தங்கள் வாழ்வை அமைத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும்.
