*1st week in Lent, Monday – 11th March 2019 — Gospel: Mt 25,31-46*

Jesus’ sermon on the last things ends climatically with this great judgement scene. It is a universal gathering of “all the nations”, which is divided basing on a single standard. In his teaching, Jesus adds compassion towards those in need as an appropriate way to live until his glorious return. The messianic king, who acts as a shepherd, determines who will enter his kingdom and demonstrates by separating the sheep from the goats. Jesus repeats the mention of those who are hungry, thirsty, away from home, naked, sick and imprisoned a total of four times in this scene. This repetition imprints the real concern of his listeners on those who are needy and least. The blessed ones had the habit of doing acts of compassion for others, but they can’t remember doing such deeds for Jesus. But those on the king’s left have committed an appalling sin of omission. These are just as perplexed as those who are blessed. They apparently do not recall the refusing to serve Jesus in his need, but they are habitual in turning their back to Jesus. The blessed will experience inexpressible joys in God’s presence forever, and the accursed will experience unspeakable horror in separation from God. The awesome nature of our choice to do or to neglect culminates in either eternal life or eternal punishment.
இறுதிக்காலம் பற்றிய இயேசுவின் இப்போதனை மாபெரும் தீர்ப்புக் காட்சியோடு நிறைவு பெறுகின்றது. இதில் எல்லா மக்களினத்தாரும் ஒருங்கிணைக்கப்படுவர்; ஆனால், ஒரு தரநிலையை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டு பிரிக்கப்படுவர். இயேசு மகிமையோடு திரும்பி வரும்வரை, தேவையில் இருப்போருக்கு இரக்கத்தோடு செயல்புரிவதே உன்னதப் பண்பு என்பதை இப்போதனையில் எடுத்துரைக்கின்றார். ஆயனாக செயல்படும் அரச மெசியா தன்னுடைய அரசாட்சியில் யாரெல்லாம் நுழையலாம் என்பதை தீர்மானிப்பதோடு, அவரே செம்மறியாட்டையும் வெள்ளாட்டையும் பிரித்து செயல்விளக்கம் அளிக்கின்றார். பசியுற்றோர், தாகமுற்றோர், ஒதுக்கப்பட்டோர், நிர்வாணமாக்கப்பட்டோர், நோயுற்றோர் மற்றும் சிறைப்பட்டோர் என்ற இப்பட்டியலை இயேசு நான்கு முறை இவ்வர்ணனையில் குறிப்பிடுகின்றார். இவ்வாறு இயேசுவின் போதனையை கேட்போர் மனதில் நீங்கா நினைவாக, தேவையில் இருப்போர் மற்றும் கடைநிலையினர் மேல் அக்கறை கொள்ள பதிவு செய்கின்றார். ஆசிபெற்றவர்கள் அனைவரும் இரக்கமுள்ள செயல்கள் செய்வதை தம் பழக்கமாக கொண்டிருந்தனர். இருப்பினும் நினைவறிந்து இயேசுவுக்காக என்று செய்யவில்லை. ஆனால், அரசருக்கு இடப்புறத்தில் இருந்தவர்கள், பாரபட்சமின்றி தவிர்த்தல் என்ற பாவத்தைச் செய்திருக்கின்றார்கள். ஆசிபெற்றவர்கள் போல இவர்களும் எவ்வாறு இயேசுவைத் தவிர்த்தோம் என்று குழம்பிப் போயிருக்கின்றார்கள். இவர்களின் இயல்பே தேவையில் இருப்போருக்கு மறுப்பதாகும்; அதே நிலையில் தான் இயேசுவையும் மறுத்திருக்கின்றார்கள். ஆசிபெற்றவர்களோ, மட்டற்ற மகிழ்ச்சியை கடவுளின் தோழமையோடு என்றென்றும் அனுபவிப்பார்கள்; சபிக்கப்பட்டவர்களோ, இறைவனின் பிரிவால் சொல்லொண்ணா துன்பத்தை அனுபவிப்பார்கள். நம்முடைய அற்புதமான தெரிவால், நல்லது செய்து அல்லது தவிர்த்து, நிலைவாழ்வு அல்லது நித்திய தண்டனை என்ற உச்சநிலையை அடைவோம்.
