24.03.2019 — Repent and bear fruit in due time

*3rd Sunday of Lent – 24th March 2019 — Gospel: Lk 13,1-9*
*Repent and bear fruit in due time*
Jesus uses two recent tragedies to emphasize the need for repentance. These incidences are a wake-up call, an occasion for people to consider the signs of the times and the need to get right with God. To each tragedy, Jesus asks whether the victims were worse sinners than others and their emphatic reply was ‘no’. Jesus warns them about the fragile nature of life and the tragic end everyone faces if they fail to repent. The timing and the circumstances of death are not so important when compared to the woes that come to those who fail to respond to God’s saving work. These tragedies lead to the parable of the fig tree emphasizing the immediate danger faced by his whole audience. The image recalls the exhortation of John the Baptist, ‘Bear fruit worthy of your repentance’, as well as his urgent warning that ‘the axe lies at the root of the tree’ (Lk 3,8-9). The open-ended parable expresses God’s patience with his people, graciously allowing a last chance to bear fruit despite a history of unfruitfulness.
