*Forgiveness of God renews us*
In this familiar context, Peter asks Jesus about the extent of forgiveness. Peter thinks that surely seven times is adequate to forgive. Jesus’ answer, however, indicates that forgiveness must be unending. His response, “seventy-seven times”, alludes to the response of Lamech, a descendant of Cain, who boasts that he will exact overwhelming vengeance on anyone who dares to attack him: “If Cain is avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy-sevenfold” (Gen 4,24). Jesus presents forgiveness as the polar opposite of revenge. He teaches through the illustration that God’s forgiving mercy towards each one knows no bounds. He urges his disciples to renounce the basic instinct to retaliate against someone who repeatedly wrongs them and instead to offer unlimited forgiveness. As we forgive, we allow that tremendous forgiveness of God to take hold of our lives and renew from within.
மிகவும் பழக்கப்பட்ட சூழலில், பேதுரு இயேசுவிடம் மன்னிப்பின் அளவைப் பற்றிக் கேட்கின்றார். பேதுரு ஏழு முறை மன்னிப்பது தகும் என்று நினைக்கின்றார். இருப்பினும் மன்னிப்பு என்பது முடிவற்றதாய் இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று இயேசு பதிலளிக்கின்றார். “எழுபது தடவை ஏழுமுறை” என்ற அவரது பதில் காயினின் வம்சாவளியினரான இலாமெக்கின் பதிலை நினைவுபடுத்துகின்றது. தன்னைத் தாக்குவோருக்கு எதிராக “காயினுக்காக ஏழுமுறை பழிவாங்கப்பட்டால் இலாமேக்கிற்காக எழுபது ஏழுமுறை பழிவாங்கப்படும்” என்ற அவனின் தற்புகழ்ச்சியினை சுட்டிக் காட்டுகின்றது. இங்கு பழி வாங்குவதற்கு எதிர் துருவமாக விளங்கும் மன்னிப்பை முன்வைக்கின்றார் இயேசு. எவ்வாறெனில், நம் ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் கடவுள் காட்டும் மன்னிப்பும் கருணையும் அளவிட முடியாதது என்பதை எடுத்துக்காட்டுடன் விளக்குகின்றார். அடிக்கடி தவறு செய்பவர்களுக்கு எதிராக பழிவாங்கும் அடிப்படை உள்ளுணர்வை நிராகரிக்கவும், அதற்கு பதிலாக வரம்பற்ற மன்னிப்பை வழங்கவும் சீடர்களை ஊக்குவிக்கின்றார். நாம் மன்னிக்கும் போது, கடவுளின் மாபெரும் மன்னிப்பில் நிரப்பட்டு புதுப்பிக்க அனுமதிக்கின்றோம்.
