By the time of Jesus, the Torah of Israel had been subjected to centuries of interpretive tradition. In fact many differing interpretations of various parts of the law were followed by the Jewish people. Jesus, as a thoroughly observant Jew, is devoted to following the way of the Torah, demonstrating his belief in the central validity of the ancient Scriptures. Yet, the teaching of Jesus is not simply a restatement of the precepts contained in the Old Testament. His mission is to fulfill, i.e., to bring the Hebrew Scriptures to their divinely intended goal, because they point to him. Since Jesus is the Messiah, he is the end or the goal of the ancient Scriptures; he is the authoritative and definitive interpreter of the law for the messianic age. His life and teaching fulfill the Torah, revealing its ultimate meaning and accomplishing its purpose. His disciples, then, must obey him, as the law’s ultimate interpreter, and teach his interpretation in order to be fit for the kingdom of heaven.
இயேசுவின் காலத்திற்கு முன்னதாகவே, பல நூற்றாண்டுகளாக இஸ்ரயேலின் தோரா சட்டங்கள் அதன் உட்பொருளை விளக்கும் பாரம்பரியத்திற்குள் உட்பட்டிருந்தன. உண்மையில், தோரா சட்டத்தின் பல்வேறு பாகங்களின் பல மாறுபட்ட விளக்கங்களை யூத மக்கள் பின்பற்றினர். தோரா சட்டங்களை முழுமையாய் கடைபிடிக்கும் யூதரான இயேசு, தோராவின் வழியைப் பின்பற்ற தம்மையே அர்ப்பணித்திருந்தார். மேலும் மையப்பொருளாய் விளங்கும் தொன்மையான திருமறையில் அவரின் நம்பகத்தன்மையை நிரூபிக்கின்றார். ஆயினும், இயேசு பழைய ஏற்பாட்டில் காணப்படும் கட்டளைகளை மறுஉரையாக மீண்டும் போதிக்கவில்லை. அவரின் குறிக்கோள் தெய்வீக இலட்சியத்தின்படி எபிரேய திருமறையை முழுமையாக்குவதாகும். காரணம், அத்திருமறை அவரையே சுட்டிக் காட்டுகின்றன. இயேசு மெசியா என்பதால் அவரே தொன்மையான திருமறையின் நிறைவு அல்லது இலக்கு ஆவார். அவரே இறுதிக்கால சட்டங்களை அதிகாரப்பூர்வமாகவும் உறுதியாகவும் மொழிபெயர்ப்பவராவார். அவருடைய வாழ்வும் போதனையும் தோராவின் இறுதி அர்த்தத்தை வெளிப்படுத்தி, அதன் நோக்கத்தை நிறைவேற்றி, தோராவை முழுமையாக்குகின்றன. அவருடைய சீடர்கள் தோரா சட்டத்தின் இறுதி மொழிபெயர்ப்பாளரான இயேசுவுக்கு கீழ்ப்படிந்து, விண்ணக இறையாட்சிக்கு தகுதியாக்க அவருடைய விளக்கங்களை போதிக்க வேண்டும்.
