*3rd week in Lent, Friday – 29th March 2019 — Gospel: Mk 12,28b-34*

The scribe’s sincere question seeks to identify the most fundamental commandment. The first commandment corresponds to the first table (first four) of the Decalogue and deals with people’s vertical relationship to God (Deut 6,4-5). The second corresponds to the second table (last six) of the Decalogue and deals with people’s horizontal relationship with one another (Lev 19,18). The “love” required in each commandment is not just an abstract emotional feeling but an active obedience towards God and acts of loving service for the well-being of others. When our hearts are set on love for God and others, then the commandments become a joy and not a burden. When love is our motivation, as the scribe affirms, then sacrifice and religious practices become ways of expressing that love. The scribe understands Jesus’ teaching, he knows the way into the kingdom, and now all that he must do is to follow the one in whose presence he stands.
மறைநூல் அறிஞரின் நேர்மையான கேள்வி மிகவும் அடிப்படை கட்டளையை அடையாளம் காண முற்படுகிறது. முதல் கட்டளை பத்துக் கட்டளைகளின் முதல் பகுதியை (1-4) ஒத்திருக்கிறது. இது கடவுளுடன் உள்ள செங்குத்தான உறவுடன் தொடர்பு கொள்கிறது. இரண்டாவது கட்டளை பத்துக் கட்டளைகளின் இரண்டாம் பகுதியை (5-10) ஒத்திருக்கிறது. இது மக்கள் ஒருவருக்கொருவர் ஏற்படுத்திக் கொள்ளும் கிடைமட்ட உறவினை கையாள்கிறது. ஒவ்வொரு கட்டளையிலும் வெளிப்படும் “அன்பு” என்பது மேலோட்டமான உணர்வு அல்ல; மாறாக, கடவுளுடன் கொள்ளும் அன்பும், மற்றும் பிறர் நலனில் காட்டும் அக்கறையும் செயலூக்கமானதாகும். கடவுள் மற்றும் மற்றவர்களுக்காக நம் உள்ளத்தில் அன்பை வெளிப்படுத்தும் போது கட்டளைகள் சுமையாக அல்லாமல் சுகமானதாக மாறுகிறது. மறைநூல் அறிஞர் வலியுறுத்துவது போன்று, அன்பு நம்முடைய உந்துதலாக இருக்கும்போது தியாகமும் மத நடைமுறைகளும் அவ்வன்பை வெளிப்படுத்தும் பாதைகளாகின்றன. மறைநூல் அறிஞர் இயேசுவின் போதனையை புரிந்து கொண்டார், இறையரசிற்கான பாதையை தெரிந்து கொண்டார், இனி அவர் செய்ய வேண்டியதெல்லாம் யார் முன்னிலையில் அவர் நிற்கிறாரோ அவரைப் பின்பற்ற வேண்டும் என்பதே.
