*3rd week in Lent, Saturday – 30th March 2019 — Gospel: Lk 18,9-14*
*God reverses human expectations *
The gospel story sets before us two ways of prayer, two ways of life, and two paths that people call religion. The parable contrasts the prayer of the Pharisee and that of the tax collector. It challenges the inner disposition of the participants. At the time of Jesus, the Pharisees were seen as models of moral and religious learning, and stood for purity and faithfulness, while the tax collectors were despised as corrupt collaborators with the Roman officials, for amassing people’s money under threat. The Pharisee exalts himself by listing all that he does for God and has no real sense of his own sinfulness and unworthiness before God. In contrast, the tax collector knows that the only way to improve his relationship with God is to rely on his merciful grace. Jesus concludes that what the Pharisee strove to achieve through his own efforts, the tax collector received as God’s gift. Again, Jesus shows how God honours’ humility and reverses human expectations.
இன்றைய நற்செய்திக் கதை மதம் பற்றி நமக்கு இரண்டு விதமான செபங்களை, வாழ்க்கையை, வழிகளை முன்வைக்கிறது. இவ்வுவமை பரிசேயர் மற்றும் வரி வசூலிப்பவர் ஆகியோரின் செப முரண்பாட்டைக் காட்டுகிறது. இது பங்கேற்பாளர்களின் உள்ளார்ந்த மனநிலைக்கு சவால் விடுக்கிறது. இயேசுவின் காலத்தில், பரிசேயர்கள் அறநெறி மற்றும் சமய போதனையின் முன்மாதிரியாய் காணப்பட்டார்கள்; தூய்மைக்கும் பற்றுறுதிக்கும் துணை நின்றார்கள். வரி தண்டுபவர்கள் மக்களின் பணத்தை அச்சுறுத்திப் பெறுபவர்கள்; உரோமை அதிகாரிகளோடு ஊழலுக்கு ஒத்துப்போனதால் ஒதுக்கி வைக்கப்பட்டவர்கள். இவ்வுவமையில் பரிசேயரோ கடவுளுக்குச் செய்கின்ற எல்லாவற்றையும் பட்டியலிடுவதன் மூலம் தன்னையே உயர்த்திக் கொள்கின்றார். அவரிடமோ கடவுளுக்கு முன்பாக தன்னுடைய பாவத்தன்மை மற்றும் தகுதியற்ற தன்மையைப் பற்றிய உண்மையான உணர்வு இல்லை. இதற்கு மாறாக, கடவுளோடு உள்ள உறவை மேம்படுத்துவதற்கான ஒரே வழி அவரின் இரக்கமிகுந்த அருளைச் சார்ந்திருப்பதே என்று வரிதண்டுபவர் அறிந்திருந்தார். பரிசேயர் தன்னுடைய சொந்த முயற்சிகளால் நிறைவேற்ற முயற்சித்ததை, வரிதண்டுபவர் கடவுளுடைய கொடையாக பெற்றுக் கொண்டார் என்று நிறைவு செய்கின்றார் இயேசு. கடவுள் மனித எதிர்பார்ப்புகளை புரட்டிப்போட்டு, தாழ்ச்சியுள்ளவனை கண்ணியமாய் உயர்த்துகின்றார் என்பதை மீண்டும் படம்பிடித்துக் காட்டுகின்றார் இயேசு.
