4th week in Lent, Saturday – 6th April 2019 — Gospel: Jn 7,40-53
Attractive teachings touched their hearts
Once again the self-revelation of Jesus provokes divisions among the people. Some came to a deeper faith in Jesus, calling him the great prophet and the Messiah. Others became more firm in their rejection of him, wanting to arrest him. Still others raised theological and political objections about the origins of the Messiah and insisted that Jesus did not meet the expectations. While the intellectuals of Jerusalem debated and argued about who Jesus was, the Temple guards probably had the best response: “Never has anyone spoken like this”. Unlike the scholars and theological experts of their day, these simple soldiers showed a great openness to Jesus’ words. The Temple guards probably knew that the Pharisees would reject their positive appraisal about Jesus. They suspected that their decision not to arrest him could land them in trouble. Yet, they did not excuse themselves of their failure to arrest Jesus. They chose to disobey their orders because his words touched their hearts. And they courageously praised Jesus of his attractive and compelling teachings.
இயேசுவின் சுய வெளிப்பாடு மீண்டும் மக்களிடையே பிளவுகளை உண்டாக்குகிறது. சிலர் இயேசுவின் மீது கொண்ட ஆழமான நம்பிக்கையினால் அவரை சிறந்த இறைவாக்கினராகவும் மெசியாவாகவும் அழைத்தார்கள். மற்றவர்கள் அவரை நிராகரிப்பதில் உறுதியாய் இருந்ததால், அவரை கைது செய்ய விரும்பினார்கள். இன்னும் சிலர் மெசியாவின் தோற்றங்களைப் பற்றிய இறையியல் மற்றும் அரசியல் முரண்பாடுகளை எழுப்பினார்கள். இதனால் இயேசு மக்களின் எதிர்பார்ப்புகளுக்குள் அமையவில்லை என்பதை வலியுறுத்தினார்கள். எருசலேமின் அறிவாளிகள் இயேசுவைப் பற்றி விவாதம் செய்து வாதாடிக் கொண்டிருக்கையில், கோவில் காவலர்கள் அநேகமாக சிறந்த பதிலைக் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்: “அவரைப்போல எவரும் என்றுமே பேசியதில்லை.” அவர்களுடைய காலத்தில் இருந்த அறிஞர்கள் மற்றும் தத்துவவியலாளர்கள் போலல்லாமல், இந்த எளிய காவலாளிகள் இயேசுவின் வார்த்தைகளுக்கு திறந்த மனப்பான்மையை வெளிப்படுத்தினார்கள். இயேசுவைப் பற்றிய தங்களின் நேர்மறையான மதீப்பீட்டை பரிசேயர்கள் நிராகரிப்பார்கள் என்று கோவில் காவலர்கள் ஒருவேளை அறிந்திருக்கலாம். அவரை கைது செய்யக் கூடாது என்ற தங்கள் முடிவு அவர்களைச் சிக்கலில் சிக்க வைக்கும் என சந்தேகித்திருக்கலாம். ஆனாலும், அவர்கள் இயேசுவை கைது செய்யாததற்கு தவறான காரணங்களை முன்வைக்கவில்லை. பரிசேயர்கள் தங்களுக்கு இட்ட கட்டளையை கீழ்ப்படியாததற்கு காரணம் இயேசுவின் வார்த்தைகள் அவர்களுடைய இதயங்களைத் தொட்டன என்பதால். எனவே, கேட்போர் அனைவரையும் வலிந்து கவனத்தை ஈர்க்கும் இயேசுவின் போதனைகளை அவர்கள் தைரியமாக பாராட்டினார்கள்.
