*5th week in Lent, Monday – 8th April 2019 — Gospel: Jn 8,12-20*
*Jesus the light of life *
During each evening of the feast of Booths, torches were lit, making the temple the light of Jerusalem. In this context, Jesus resumed his discourse saying, that he is the temple light and “light of life”. The feast of the Booths commemorated Israel’s wandering in the desert. If then, the light recalled the pillar of fire that manifested God’s presence and led his people to freedom. Here the evangelist John continues the exodus theme and presents Jesus as the completion of God’s saving deeds for his people. The Jewish literature had declared that the law given to Moses was the light given to the world (Wis 18,4). In that sense, what the Torah was once for Israel, Jesus is now to the world. Those who follow him will not walk in darkness. He will lead his followers from the darkness into the fullness of freedom and life. For Jesus is the perfection of the Torah’s light and the personification of the temple’s light.
கூடாரத் திருவிழாவின் ஒவ்வொரு மாலையிலும் ஒளிப்பந்தங்கள் ஏற்றப்பட்டு எருசலேம் ஆலயம் ஒளிமயமாய் காட்சியளித்தன. இச்சூழ்நிலையில், இயேசுவே ஆலயத்தின் ஒளியாகவும், வாழ்வின் ஒளியாகவும் திகழ்கின்றார் என்ற தம்முடைய போதனையை மீண்டும் தொடர்கின்றார். கூடாரத் திருவிழாவானது பாலைவனத்தில் இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் அலைந்து திரிந்து கொண்டிருந்ததை நினைவுபடுத்துகின்றது. அப்படியானால், நெருப்புத் தூணியின் மூலம் கடவுளின் பிரசன்னத்தையும், மக்களை சுதந்திரத்திற்கு அழைத்துச் சென்றதையும் ஒளியானது நினைவு கூறுகின்றது. இங்கு நற்செய்தியாளர் யோவான் விடுதலை கருத்துக்களைத் தொடர்கின்றார். அதாவது, இயேசுவே கடவுளின் மீட்புச் செயலை நிறைவு செய்பவர் என்று வர்ணிக்கின்றார். மோசேவுக்கு கொடுக்கப்பட்ட திருச்சட்டம் இவ்வுலகிற்கு கொடுக்கப்பட்ட ஒளி என்று யூத இலக்கியங்கள் அறிவித்திருந்தன. இதே பின்னணியில், இஸ்ரயேலுக்கு எவ்வாறு திருச்சட்டம் கட்டாயமாய் அமைந்ததோ, அதுபோல இயேசுவும் இவ்வுலகிற்கு இப்பொழுது இன்றியமையாதவராய் உள்ளார். எனவே அவரைப் பின்பற்றுவோர் இருளில் நடவார். இயேசு தம்மை பின்பற்றுபவர்களை இருளிலிருந்து முழுமையான சுதந்திரத்திற்கும் வாழ்வுக்கும் அழைத்துச் செல்கின்றார். ஏனெனில், இயேசுவே ஒளியாம் திருச்சட்டத்தின் நிறைவையும் ஆலய ஒளியின் உருவகத்தையும் குறித்துக் காட்டுகின்றார்.
