*5th week in Lent, Saturday – 13th April 2019 — Gospel: Jn 11,45-57*
*Jesus’ death is a redemptive plan *
Jesus’ act of giving life to Lazarus leads to his own life being taken away. The raising of Lazarus provokes a divided response among the people: many believed in Jesus, and others went to inform the religious authorities of Jerusalem what Jesus had done. At the meeting of the council, the authorities expressed fear that Jesus and his followers might provoke a revolt. Caiaphas, the high priest, accuses the council of being unable to understand the gravity of the situation. Fearing that he would lose power and everything he had, Caiaphas designs a strategy. His words challenge his listeners to get rid of Jesus so that the nation will not suffer. However, being high priest, Caiaphas’ words of political convenience were understood by his listeners to be message from God as well. John the evangelist seizes the high priest’s prophetic words to explain the fuller significance of Jesus’ death. Caiaphas, with his shrewdness and without knowingly, proclaimed that the death of Jesus would be redemptive both for the Jewish people and for all people. His death would not only save God’s people but would unify all who believe into a single-fold.
லாசருக்கு மறுவாழ்வை கொடுக்கும் இயேசுவின் செயல் தன் சொந்த வாழ்வை இழப்பதற்கு வழிவகுக்கிறது. லாசரை உயிர்ப்பித்ததால் பலவிதமான எதிர்ச்செயலை சந்திக்க வேண்டியிருந்தது: பலர் இயேசுவின் மேல் நம்பிக்கை கொண்டனர், வேறு சிலர் எருசலேமில் உள்ள யூதத் தலைவர்களிடம் சென்று அவர் செய்த செயலை முறையிட்டனர். இயேசுவும் அவரைப் பின்பற்றுவோரும் கிளர்ச்சியைத் தூண்டலாம் என்று தலைமைச் சங்க அதிகாரிகள் தெரிவித்தனர். தலைமை குரு கயபாவோ குழப்பமான இச்சூழ்நிலையினை புரிந்து கொள்ளாத தலைமைச் சங்கத்தைக் குற்றம் சாட்டினார். தன்னுடைய அதிகாரத்தையும் பொருளாதாரத்தையும் இழந்து விடுவோம் என்ற பயத்தினால் கயபா ஒரு சூழ்ச்சியான திட்டத்தை வடிவமைக்கின்றார். இத்திட்டம் அவருடைய நாட்டை காப்பாற்றவும் இயேசுவை ஒழித்துக் கட்டவும் அமைந்திருந்ததால் கேட்பவர்களுக்கு அது சவாலாக அமைந்திருந்தது. இருப்பினும், கயபாவின் அரசியல் சூழ்ச்சி கேட்பவர்களுக்கு கடவுளிடமிருந்து வரும் செய்தியாக புரிந்து கொள்ளப்பட்டது. நற்செய்தியாளர் யோவான் தலைமைக் குருவின் இவ்வார்த்தைகளை இயேசுவினுடைய இறப்பின் முக்கியத்துவத்தை விளக்கும் இறைவாக்காக உருவகிக்கின்றார். இதில் கயபாவின் கயமைத்தனமும் மற்றும் அறியாமையும் இணைந்துள்ளன. இவ்வாறு இயேசுவின் இறப்பு யூதர்களுக்கும் எல்லா மக்களுக்கும் மீட்பளிக்கும் அடையாளமாய் அமைந்துள்ளதை அறிவிக்கின்றார். இயேசுவின் இறப்பு கடவுளின் எல்லா மக்களையும் காப்பாற்ற மட்டுமல்ல, மாறாக நம்பும் அனைவரையும் ஒரே மந்தையின் மக்களாக ஒன்றிணைக்கவே.
