*Monday of the Holy Week – 15th April 2019 — Gospel: Jn 12,1-11*
*Love and do in extravagance *
In the home of Lazarus in Bethany, Martha responds to Jesus with the practical service of providing the meal, while Mary responds with impractical extravagance at the feet of Jesus. The scene is remarkable for its lavishness. The perfume was costly to the extreme, and the act of drying the anointed feet of Jesus with her hair was shockingly luxurious. The normal use of such perfume dictated that it be applied a few drops at a time. To use a pound at once was irrational and, in the eyes of many, foolish. No wonder the house was filled with the fragrance. The extravagance scene represents in miniature what Jesus will do in the final days of his life. His love is lavish. He will pour out his lifeblood to anoint us with grace. His action seems foolish to many, but the fragrance of his divine love fills the whole world. The lavish anointing is a preview of Christ’s self-giving and alerts us to the fact that the passion of Jesus is more about loving than about suffering.
பெத்தானியாவில் உள்ள லாசர் வீட்டில் உணவைப் பரிமாறும் சேவையுடன் மார்த்தாள் இயேசுவுக்கு நடைமுறைக்குரிய பணிவிடை செய்தாள். அதே சமயம் இயேசுவின் காலடியில் அமர்ந்திருந்த மரியாளின் நடவடிக்கை நடைமுறைக்கு சாத்தியமற்றதாகும். இங்கு காணும் நிகழ்வு மிகைப்படுத்துதலை குறித்துக் காட்டுகின்றன. மிகவும் விலையுயர்ந்த நறுமணத் தைலத்தை அர்ச்சிக்கப்பட்ட இயேசுவின் பாதங்களில் தடவி அப்பெண்ணின் முடியைக் கொண்டு உலர்த்தியது ஆடம்பரமாக இருந்தது. இத்தகைய வாசனை திரவியங்களை ஒரு சில துளிகளே பயன்படுத்தப்பட வேண்டும் என்ற கட்டளையிருந்தது. ஆனால் பாட்டில் முழுவதையும் பயன்படுத்துவது பகுத்தறிவற்றது; பலருடைய கண்களுக்கு முட்டாள்தனமாக இருந்தது. இதனால் வீடு முழுவதும் தைலத்தின் நறுமணம் நிரம்பி இருந்தது ஆச்சரியமே. இம்மிகைப்படுத்தும் காட்சியானது இயேசு அவரது வாழ்நாளின் இறுதியில் என்ன செய்யப் போகிறார் என்பதை மிகச்சிறந்த முறையில் விவரிக்கின்றது. அவருடைய அன்பு மிகுதியானது. நம்மை அவரது அருளினால் அருட்பொழிவு செய்ய அவருடைய இரத்தத்தை பொழிகின்றார் என்பதே அது. அவருடைய நடவடிக்கை பலருக்கு முட்டாள்தனமாக இருந்தாலும், அவருடைய தெய்வீக அன்பின் நறுமணம் உலகம் முழுவதையும் நிரப்புகின்றது. இந்த ஆடம்பர அருட்பொழிவு கிறிஸ்துவினுடைய தற்கையளிப்பின் முன்னடையாளமாகும். இது இயேசுவின் பாடுகளிலே உள்ள உண்மையை அதாவது துன்பத்தை விட அன்பே மிகுந்துள்ளது என்று நமக்கு வெளிப்படுத்துகின்றது.
