19.04.2019 — Do I play my part?

*Good Friday – 19th April 2019 — Gospel: Jn 18,1-19,42*
*Do I play my part?*
Carrying the cross by himself Jesus went out to what is called the Place of the Skull, in Hebrew, Golgotha (John 19,16-17). Where do you see yourself, as Jesus walks the rough path to the hill of Golgotha? Are you like Judas betraying Jesus with your sins? Or like Peter act like coward in pretending that you don’t know the Lord? Or shy away and disappear in darkness like the other apostles by not sharing courageously your faith? Or like Pontius Pilate who asked “what is truth?” not in view of knowing but in pretention to protect his reputation? Or like Soldiers executing others’ command by beating him up, driving nails into his hands and feet, piercing his side mercilessly? Or like helpful Simeon who shouldered his cross towards Calvary? Or like Veronica who daringly wiped his bleeding? Or like women of Jerusalem who sympathized with tears? Or like the secret disciples Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus who gave decent burial in a new tomb with perfumes? Or like his mother Mary, who with her unstinted faith accompanied Jesus till the end? Certainly, we have our part to play in carrying the cross with Jesus. But Jesus’ carrying is one different from all others. His self-giving embodies for peace in an age of violence; forgiveness in an age of victimization; humility in an age of spiritual arrogance; equality in an age of division and love in a world of hatred.
