The resurrected Jesus is not leaving any stone unturned to make his disciples believe that he has truly risen. Having known that signs and miracles become ineffective before doubt and fear, Jesus continues to remove them through his personal appearances. Despite all these, Thomas does not believe others when they tell him about Jesus’ resurrection. Unlike the other disciples, for whom seeing leads to believing, for Thomas, more is required. He wants tangible proof of the resurrection. When Jesus appeared the following week, he invites Thomas to touch his wounded hands and his side, his doubts disappear. His skepticism is transformed into the supreme profession of Christian faith “My Lord and my God.” Although Jesus is given many titles in John’s Gospel, Thomas’ climactic exclamation and affirmation of Christ’s divinity is more profound than anything else. Through his selected signs and personal authentication, Jesus highlights the necessity of believing before launching into proclaiming.
இயேசு உண்மையிலேயே உயிர்த்தெழுந்தார் என்பதை அவருடைய சீடர்கள் நம்புவதற்கு நிறைய வாய்ப்புகளை உயிர்த்தெழுந்த இயேசு உருவாக்குகின்றார். சந்தேகங்களுக்கும் அச்சங்களுக்கும் முன்னால் அடையாளங்களும் அற்புதங்களும் பயனற்றவை என்று அறிந்த இயேசு தொடர்ந்து அவற்றை களைய தனிப்பட்ட முறையில் தம்மையே வெளிப்படுத்துகின்றார். இருந்த போதிலும், மற்றவர்கள் உயிர்த்த இயேசுவின் சாட்சியத்தை தோமையாரிடம் அறிவித்தபோது அவர் நம்பவில்லை. மற்ற சீடர்களுக்கு காணுதல் என்பது நம்பிக்கைக்கு இட்டுச் செல்வதுபோல, ஆனால் தோமையாருக்கு இன்னும் மிகுதியான சாட்சியம் தேவைப்படுகிறது. எனவே உயிர்தெழுதலின் உறுதியான ஆதாரத்தை அவர் விரும்புகின்றார். மறுபடியும் அடுத்த வாரம் இயேசு தோன்றிய போது, தோமையாரின் சந்தேகங்களைக் களைய காயமடைந்த கைகளையும் விலாவினையும் தொட்டுப் பார்க்க அவரை அழைக்கின்றார். இதனால், அவருடைய ஐயங்கள் மறைந்து ஆழமான கிறிஸ்தவ நம்பிக்கையை “என் ஆண்டவரே! என் கடவுளே!” என்று அறிவிக்கின்றார். யோவானின் நற்செய்தி இயேசுவுக்கு பல சிறப்புப் பெயர்களை வழங்கினாலும் தோமையாரின் உன்னத அறிவிப்பையும் கிறிஸ்துவின் இறைத்தன்மையினையும் அங்கீகரிக்கும் இப்பெயர் வேறு எதையும் விட ஆழமாக அமைந்துள்ளது. தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்ட அடையாளங்களாலும் தனிப்பட்ட உறுதிப்பாட்டினாலும் தன்னையே வெளிப்படுத்தும் இயேசு, நற்செய்தியை அறிவிக்க நம்பிக்கையின் அவசியத்தை இங்கு வலியுறுத்துகின்றார்.
