*Opportunities to affirm His discipleship*
The gospel writer creates a scene on the shore with the charcoal fire, where Jesus questions Peter thrice of his commitment to him. By making this scene, Jesus has recreated the setting in which Peter denied him thrice. The fire reminds Peter of the cold, hostile questioning in the courtyard of the high priest. In the presence of this new fire, which is warm and inviting, Jesus offers Peter another opportunity to affirm his discipleship. In this light, Peter’s agonizing over his denials is brought to an end as he experiences the healing and reconciling presence of the risen Lord. This time Peter responds more cautiously and humbly, being aware of his vulnerability and limitations. From the past, he has learned that he cannot be Jesus’ follower relying solely on his own strength and will power. Jesus, without referring to Peter’s past, commissions him with the same words that began their relationship: “Follow me.” Only now Peter’s call to follow Jesus takes on a new and deeper meaning. For the remaining decades of his life, Peter will live in the shadow of the cross, just as Jesus did. He will follow the great Shepherd, tending his flock as shepherd of Christ’s followers. And finally, he will follow Jesus in the kind of death he will suffer, and by that death, he will bring glory to God.
கடலோரத்தில் தீ மூட்டத்திற்கு அருகில் பேதுருவிடம் இயேசு மூன்று முறை அவருடைய உறுதிப்பாட்டிற்கான கேள்விகளைத் தொடுக்கும் காட்சியினை வரைந்துள்ளார் நற்செய்தியாளர். இக்காட்சி அமைப்பு இயேசுவை பேதுரு மூன்று முறை மறுதலித்ததை அடையாளப்படுத்த மீண்டும் அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. பேதுருவுக்கு நெருப்பு என்றவுடன் தலைமை குரு வீட்டு முற்றத்தில் அவரைக் கேள்விக்குட்படுத்தியது நினைவுக்கு வந்திருக்கும். மனதைக் கவரும் புதிய தீயான இந்த இளஞ்சூட்டில், பேதுரு சீடத்துவத்தில் உறுதியாய் வாழ இன்னொரு சந்தர்ப்பத்தை இயேசு வழங்குகின்றார். இவ்வெளிச்சத்தில், பேதுரு தனது மறுதலிப்புக்கான துயரங்களுக்கு முற்றுப்புள்ளி வைத்துவிட்டு உயிர்த்த ஆண்டவரின் குணமளிக்கும் மற்றும் மன்னிக்கும் உடனிருப்பினை அனுபவிக்கின்றார். தன்னுடைய பலவீனங்களையும் இயல்புகளையும் உணர்ந்திருந்த பேதுரு இம்முறை மிகவும் எச்சரிக்கையாகவும் தாழ்மையாகவும் பதில் அளிக்கின்றார். கடந்த கால அனுபவத்தில் இயேசுவைப் பின்பற்ற தன்னுடைய சொந்த ஆற்றலும் வல்லமையும் மட்டும் போதாது என்று தெளிவாக அறிந்திருக்கிறார். பேதுருவின் கடந்த காலத்தை இயேசு குறிப்பிடாமல் “என்னைப் பின்பற்று” என்பதன் வழியாக பழைய உறவினை தொடர அழைக்கின்றார். இவ்வழைப்பு இயேசுவை நெருக்கமாய் பின்பற்ற பேதுருவுக்கு புதிய, ஆழமான அர்த்தத்தை தருகிறது. இதனால், தன்னுடைய மீதமுள்ள வாழ்நாளில் பேதுரு இயேசுவைப் போன்று சிலுவையின் நிழலில் வாழலானார். பெரிய ஆயனைப் பின்பற்றி கிறிஸ்துவின் சீடர்களுக்கு மந்தையை கண்காணிக்கும் மேய்ப்பாளரானார். இறுதியில், மரணம் வரை இயேசுவைப் பின்பற்றி, அம்மரணத்தில் கடவுளை மகிமைப்படுத்துகின்றார்.
