*Be a seeker of truth and understanding *
New Testament mentions Thomas in eight passages, of which four are lists of apostles merely with his name and without revealing his personality (Mt 10,3; Mk 3,18; Lk 6,15; Acts 1,13). But John’s gospel includes more intimate details that could help us to learn and understand Thomas’s life with Christ (Jn 11,16; 20,24; 21,2). Thomas’ question reveals him to be a seeker of truth and understanding (14,5). His naturally cautious temperament did not close his mind to further knowledge. When Thomas saw what he ought to do, he urgently wanted to know how to do it. As a daring person, without hesitation, and not being afraid of parading his ignorance he spoke out his mind for they knew neither the place where Jesus is going to nor how to get there. To which we received one of the most memorable sayings of Jesus: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life”. Thomas shows that the disciples are not group of blind followers to believe anything and everything. His search for the truth prompted him to question everything until he attained personal conviction.
புதிய ஏற்பாட்டில் எட்டு பகுதிகளில் தோமையாரின் பெயர் பதிவு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது. அதில் நான்கில் அவரது ஆளுமையை வெளிப்படுத்தாமல் வெறுமனே அவரது பெயர் அப்போஸ்தலர்கள் பட்டியலில் இடம் பெறுகின்றன. யோவான் நற்செய்தியில் மற்ற நான்கு பகுதிகளும் இடம் பெற்றுள்ளன. இதில் தோமையார் கிறிஸ்துவோடு கொண்ட நெருக்கத்தை அறிந்து கொள்ளவும் அவரது சிந்தனையை புரிந்து கொள்ளவும் விவரங்கள் நிறைய உள்ளன. இங்கு தோமையார் எழுப்பிய கேள்வி மூலம் அவர் உண்மையைத் தேடுபவராகவும் புரிந்து கொள்ள முற்படுபவராகவும் வெளிப்படுத்தப்படுகிறது. அவருடைய இயல்பான, எச்சரிக்கையான மனோபாவம் அவரது அறிந்து கொள்ளும் மனப்பக்குவத்தை மூடி வைக்கவில்லை. என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும் என்று எதிர்நோக்கியிருந்த போது அதை எப்படி செய்வது என்று உடனடியாக அறிய விரும்பியவர் தோமையார். துணிச்சலின் அடையாளமான அவர் எவ்வித தயக்கமும் இன்றி தனது அறியாமையைப் பற்றிய கவலை கொள்ளாமல், “இயேசு எங்கே செல்கிறார், எவ்வாறு அங்கு செல்ல முடியும்” என்று எவரும் அறிந்திராத நிலையில், தன்னுடைய மனவோட்டத்தை வெளிப்படையாக எடுத்துக் கூறுகிறார். இதனால் நாம் இயேசுவைப் பற்றி மிகவும் உன்னதமாய் நினைவு கூறும், “நானே வழியும், உண்மையும், வாழ்வும்” என்ற நம்பிக்கைக் கூற்றை பெற்றுக் கொண்டோம். சீடர்கள் அனைவரும் எதிலும் எல்லாவற்றிலும் கண்மூடித்தனமாய் நம்பிக்கை கொள்பவர்கள் அல்ல என்று தோமையார் செயலில் வெளிப்படுத்துகிறார். உண்மைக்கான அவரது தேடல் அவரில் தனிப்பட்ட நம்பிக்கையை ஏற்படுத்தும் வரை எல்லாவற்றையும் கேள்வி கேட்கத் தூண்டியது.
