*5th Sunday of Easter – 19th May 2019 — Gospel: Jn 13,31-33a.34-35 *
*Not a commandment, but a gift *
The world is crazy to present ‘newness’ in everything, and at times calls as creativity or fashion. In this manner, the heart of Jesus’ instruction presents his followers ‘new’ understanding of ‘love’: “Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another” (Jn 13,34). Although love in many ways is expressed in possessive form, Jesus gives a commandment that is very old and totally new at the same time. It is based on God’s ancient commandment: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself” (Lev 19,18). It is new because the standard of love is Jesus himself. To love one another as Jesus has loved us, i.e., to love like God. Though God has shown his love for us in the past and in many ways, but it has reached the point where His Son would die for us. This love is more than a commandment, it is a totally a gratuitous gift. It is in and through Christ-like love that his true disciples will be recognized by all.
இவ்வுலகம் எல்லாவற்றிலும் “நூதனத்தை” முன்வைக்க பம்பரமாய் அலைகிறது. சில நேரங்களில் இந்நூதனம் பிரபலமானது அல்லது கற்பனை கலந்தது என்று அழைக்கிறது. இந்த விதத்தில் இயேசுவின் போதனையின் மையமும் அன்பின் புரிதலில் உள்ள நூதனத்தை தருகிறது: “நான் உங்களிடம் அன்பு செலுத்தியது போல நீங்களும் ஒருவர் மற்றவரிடம் அன்பு செலுத்துங்கள்” என்று. அன்பு பல்வேறு கோணங்களில் அனைவரையும் சொந்தமாக்கிக் கொள்வதையே அடிப்படையாக வெளிப்படுத்தினாலும், தன்னுடைய அன்புக் கட்டளையில் இயேசு மிக பழைய மற்றும் முற்றிலும் புதிய கட்டளைகளை இணைத்துத் தருகிறார். இக்கட்டளை, “உன் மீது நீ அன்பு கூர்வது போல உனக்கு அடுத்திருப்பவர் மீதும் அன்பு கூர்வாயாக” என்ற பழைய கட்டளையை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டது. இந்த அன்பின் அளவுகோலே இயேசுவாக இருப்பதால் இக்கட்டளை புதிய அர்த்தம் பெறுகிறது. இயேசு நம்மை அன்பு செய்தது போலவே நாமும் ஒருவரையொருவர் அன்பு செய்ய வேண்டும், அதாவது, கடவுளே அன்பு செய்வது போல அன்பு செய்ய வேண்டும். முற்காலத்தில் பல வழிகளில் கடவுள் நம்மீது அன்பு காட்டியிருந்தாலும், அவருடைய மகன் நமக்காக இறந்ததில் இவ்வன்பு இறுதிநிலையை அடைந்தது. இந்த அன்பு, கட்டளைகளை விட உயர்ந்தது, காரணம் இது முற்றிலும் இலவச கொடையாகும். கிறிஸ்துவைப் போல செயலில் அன்பை வெளிப்படுத்துபவர்களே உண்மையான சீடர்கள் என்று எல்லோரும் அறிந்து கொள்வர் .
