“I am the true vine” is the last of Jesus’ seven “I am sayings” in John’s gospel. Twice Jesus promises that he is the vine. In that promise we are the branches that make up the vine. And we are transformed by a new reality in which we are empowered and commissioned as disciples. We receive life from him not by being merely connected to him. We share in his life by becoming part of him. Jesus not only gives us life but he lives his life in us, so that we are fully united with him and live in him. When we are united with Jesus in faith, we actually live with his life and love with his love. This mystical union between Jesus and believers is expressed by the word “abide”, which offers deeply personal and lasting union of lives. As the branches abide in the vine so that they can bear fruit; so the believer abides in Jesus to produce the lasting fruit of unselfish love.
யோவான் நற்செய்தியில் “உண்மையான திராட்சைக் செடி நானே” என்ற வாக்கியம் இயேசுவின் ‘நானே’ கூற்றுகளின் கடைசி ஏழாவது ஆகும். இயேசு “நானே திராட்சை செடி” என்று இருமுறை வாக்குறுதி அளிக்கிறார். அந்த வாக்குறுதியில் நாம் அவருடைய கிளைகளாக உருவாக்கம் அடைகிறோம். இப்புதிய சூழலில் உருமாற்றப்பட்ட நாம் அதிகாரமும் நியமனமும் பெற்று அவருடைய சீடர்களாகிறோம். அவருடன் இணைந்திருப்பதன் மூலம் நாம் அவருடைய வாழ்வைப் பெற முடியாது. அவருடைய வாழ்வில் பங்கு பெறுவதால் மட்டுமே நாம் அவரில் இணைந்திருக்க முடியும். இயேசு நமக்கு வாழ்வை மட்டும் தரவில்லை, மாறாக நம் வாழ்வில் இரண்டறக் கலந்துள்ளார். இதனால் முழுமையாக அவருடைன் இணைந்துள்ளோம் அவருடனே வாழ்கின்றோம். இயேசுவுடன் முழுநம்பிக்கையோடு இணைந்திருந்தால் அவருடைய வாழ்வை நாம் வாழ்ந்து வருவோம் மற்றும் அவருடைய அன்பினால் மற்றவர்களை அன்பு செய்வோம். இயேசுவுக்கும் நம்பிக்கையாளருக்கும் இடையே உள்ள மறை ஒன்றிப்பு ‘இணைந்திருப்பது’ என்ற வார்த்தையால் வெளிப்படுத்தப்படுகிறது. இது ஆழமான தனிப்பட்ட மற்றும் நீடித்த வாழ்வின் ஒன்றிப்பைக் குறிப்பதாகும். கனி கொடுப்பதற்காக கிளைகள் திராட்சைக் செடியோடு இணைந்திருப்பது போல, தன்னலமற்ற அன்பு கொண்ட நம்பிக்கையாளர் நீடித்த கனி தர இயேசுவோடு இணைந்திருக்கிறார்.
