*Prays for Unity not Uniformity *
Jesus not only prays for the disciples gathered around him but also for all future believers who do not yet know him. He prays for the unity of all disciples, “that they may be one”. This prayer of Jesus contains the word “one” four times in three verses (vv.21-23). The unity among disciples for which Jesus prays has nothing to do with uniformity. Because genuine internal unity is so difficult to achieve, the Church often settles for some kind of uniformity. But the unity that comes through love for one another requires that individual people be true to their uniqueness. Diversity is the hallmark of a unified community. The genuine unity for which Jesus prayed is not a conformity of ideas, but a community united in love, characterized by trust, and healed by forgiveness. This unity will be not only a source of fulfillment for believers, but it will be a powerful witness to the world. Jesus says, its purpose is to confirm his mission and the love of the Father.
இயேசு தம்மைச் சுற்றியிருந்த சீடர்களுக்காக மட்டும் செபிக்கவில்லை, மாறாக இன்னும் அவரை அறியாத எதிர்கால நம்பிக்கையாளர்களுக்காகவும் செபிக்கிறார். எல்லா சீடர்களின் ஒற்றுமைக்காக “எல்லாரும் ஒன்றாய் இருப்பார்களாக” என்று செபிக்கிறார். இயேசுவின் இச்செபத்தில் “ஒன்றாய்” என்ற வார்த்தை மூன்று வசனங்களில் நான்கு முறை இடம்பெற்றுள்ளது. சீடர்களின் ஒற்றுமைக்கான இச்செபத்தில் இயேசு ஒத்திசைவான நிலையை உருவாக்க விரும்பவில்லை. உண்மையான உள் ஒற்றுமையை அடைவது கடினமாக உள்ளதால், அவ்வப்போது திருச்சபை ஒத்திசைவான நிலையை ஏற்றுக் கொள்கிறது. ஆனால் ஒருவருக்கொருவர் பரிமாறிக்கொள்ளும் அன்பினால் பெறும் ஒற்றுமை தனி நபர்களின் தனித்துவத்திற்கு உண்மையாய் இருக்க வலியுறுத்துகிறது. பன்முகத்தன்மையே ஒன்றுபட்ட குழுமத்தின் தனித்தன்மையாகும். இயேசு செபித்த உண்மையான ஓற்றுமை கருத்துக்களின் ஒற்றுமை அல்ல; ஆனால் அன்பில் ஐக்கியப்பட்ட இக்குழுமம், நம்பிக்கையின் குணாதிசயத்தையும் மன்னிப்பால் குணமளிப்பதையும் கொண்டுள்ளது. இந்த ஒற்றுமை நம்பிக்கையாளர்களுக்கு நிறைவளிக்கும் ஆதாரம் மட்டும் அல்ல; மாறாக, உலகிற்கு அது மிகச்சிறந்த சாட்சியாக விளங்குகிறது. இதன் நோக்கம் இறைத்தந்தையின் அன்பையும் பணியையும் உறுதிப்படுத்துவதாகும் என்று இயேசு கூறுகிறார்.
