*Being Proud to be Spiritual*
Having spoken of the duties of everyday social life, Jesus now deals with specific religious actions – almsgiving, prayer, fasting. In all these actions, Jesus admonishes his followers to be different from the hypocrites. It is pride that moves one to play the hypocrite. In each practice the individuals in question appear to be serving God, but in fact they are serving themselves: “to be honoured by men” (6,2); “to be seen by men” (6,5); “to show men” (6,16). They are hypocrites, who are not merely proud of being spiritual, but are proud of being more spiritual than others. Thus pride wants to survive above all the others, who respect them and render them honour. Jesus condemns pretention and instead requests sincerity, simplicity and humility in exercising these practices. Outwardly it appears that these exercises are really directed towards God, but at the heart of heart pride insists that God is never brought into the picture at all. For the proud person, the sovereign God is the most threatening figure of all.
அன்றாட சமூக வாழ்வின் கடமைகளைப் பற்றி பேசிய இயேசு இப்போது – தானம், செபம், உபவாசம் ஆகிய மத நடவடிக்கைகளைக் குறிப்பிட்டு பேசுகின்றார். இச்செயல்களில், வெளிவேடக்காரரை விட சற்று வித்தியாசமாக இருக்கும்படி தம்மைப் பின்பற்றுகிறவர்களுக்கு அறிவுறுத்துகின்றார். தற்பெருமையே வெளிவேடத்திற்கு மூல காரணமாக அமைகின்றது. ஓவ்வொரு செயல்பாட்டிலும் தனிநபர் கடவுளுக்காக செயல்படுவதுபோல் தோன்றினாலும், உண்மையில் அவர் “மனிதர்களால் மதிக்கப்படவும்”, “ மற்றவர்கள் பார்க்கவும்”, “வெளிக்காட்டவும்” என்று தங்களுக்கான தேடலில் ஈடுபடுகிறார்கள். இந்த வெளிவேடக்காரர்கள் தற்பெருமைக்காக மட்டும் பக்தியை வெளிப்படுத்துவதில்லை; மாறாக மற்றவர்களைவிட சிறந்தவர்கள் என்று காட்டிக் கொள்ளவும் பெருமைப்படுகிறார்கள். இவ்வாறு அவர்களின் தற்பெருமை மற்ற அனைவருக்கும் மேலாக, அவர்களை மதிப்பவர்களையும் மரியாதை அளிப்பவர்களையும் விட மேலாக வாழ விரும்புகிறது. இயேசு இந்த போலித்தனத்தை கண்டனம் செய்கின்றார்; அதற்கு பதிலாக நேர்மை, எளிமை, மற்றும் தாழ்ச்சியை செயல்படுத்த அழைக்கின்றார். வெளிப்பார்வைக்கு இச்செயல்கள் உண்மையில் கடவுளை நோக்கியதாகவே தோன்றுகிறது; ஆனால் உள்ளத்தின் ஆழத்தில் கடவுள் பற்றிய எண்ணங்கள் இச்செயல்களில் வெளிப்படுவதே இல்லை. இதனால் தற்பெருமை கொள்பவர் எல்லா வல்ல இறைவனை மிகவும் அச்சுறுத்தும் நபராகவே காண்கிறார்.
