Sharing a meal in the Jewish culture implies building a close relationship. Jesus wishes to express his closeness with tax collectors and sinners by dining with them. This gesture elicits a protest from his opponents. Jesus’ response, in the form of a metaphor, suggests that the illness of those in sin needs the saving medicine of God’s physician. Further, he suggests that the Pharisees reflect on the words of Hosea, “I desire mercy, not sacrifice” (Hos 6,6). This prophetic text prioritizes personal integrity and social justice over the performance of sacrificial ritual. Jesus’ insistence that his opponents “go and learn” the meaning of the text suggests that they do not understand this fundamental teaching of the biblical prophets. Like the prophets before him, Jesus does not advocate abolishing the temple and the religious systems that surrounds it. But he understands the greater priority of compassion and forgiveness in religious practice. Associating with sinners and outcasts and calling them to repentance become hallmarks of Jesus’ ministry, as the righteous find it difficult to respond to his call.
யூத கலாச்சாரத்தில் உணவுப் பகிர்வு என்பது உறவுகளின் நெருக்கத்தைக் கட்டியெழுப்புவதாகும். வரி வசூலிப்பவர்களுடனும் பாவிகளுடனும் உண்பதன் மூலம் இயேசு தனது நெருக்கத்தை வெளிப்படுத்த விரும்புகிறார். இச்செயல் அவருடைய எதிரிகளிடமிருந்து ஒரு எதிர்ப்பை உருவாக்குகின்றது. உருவக வடிவில் பதில் அளித்த இயேசு, பாவத்தில் வீழ்ந்து கிடக்கும் நோயாளிக்கு மருத்துவரான கடவுளின் மீட்பு என்ற மருந்து தேவை என்று அறிவுறுத்துகிறார். மேலும் பரிசேயர்கள் “பலியை அல்ல, இரக்கத்தையே விரும்புகிறேன்” என்ற இறைவாக்கினர் ஒசேயாவின் வார்த்தைகளை பிரதிபலிக்க வேண்டும் என்றும் அறிவுறுத்துகிறார். இந்த இறைவாக்கு வசனம் பலிசெலுத்தும் சடங்கை விட சமூக நீதிக்கும் மற்றும் தனிப்பட்ட ஒழுங்குக்கும் முன்னுரிமை அளிக்கிறது. இறைவாக்கினர்களின் இந்த அடிப்படை போதனையை அவர்கள் புரிந்து கொள்ளாததால் இயேசு தம்முடைய எதிரிகளிடம் “நீங்கள் போய் கற்றுக் கொள்ளுங்கள்” என்று வலியுறுத்துகிறார். தனக்கு முன் இருந்த இறைவாக்கினர்களைப் போல, ஆலயத்தையும் அதைச் சுற்றியுள்ள மத அமைப்புகளையும் ஒழிக்க இயேசு பரிந்துரைக்கவில்லை. ஆனால் மதம் சார்ந்த நடைமுறை அமைப்புகளில் இரக்கத்திற்கும் மன்னிப்பிற்கும் அதிக முன்னுரிமை அளிக்க வேண்டும் என்று புரிந்து கொள்கிறார். நீதிமான்கள் இயேசுவினுடைய அழைப்பிற்கு பதிலளிப்பது கடினம் என்பதால், பாவிகளுடனும் ஒதுக்கப்பட்டோருடனும் தன்னை இணைத்துக் கொள்வதும் அவர்களை மனமாற்றத்திற்கு அழைப்பதும் இயேசுவினுடைய மறைப்பணியின் அடையாளங்களாக மாறின.
