Like the Sermon on the Mount, this Sermon to the Apostles is Matthew’s collection of sayings of Jesus under the theme of mission. Historically it is directed to Jesus’ original apostles, but it is also aimed at the Church addressed by Matthew, the gospel writer. This open-ended relevance of the sermon extends its importance to the Church in every age, offering practical guidelines for the mission. Jesus tells the disciples not to make extensive preparations for their journey, bringing no additional money or clothing. These are distractions to serve God in truth and in spirit. Their needs will be met by the support of those who hear and receive their message. Such a life of simplicity would enhance their credibility and authenticity. This sermon reminds disciples of Jesus in every age that their ultimate resource is his presence with them and not their own provisions. Agents of Jesus live simply, depending God’s providence and embodying Jesus’ presence. Like Jesus, their reception by others will be mixed. They will be rejected and even persecuted by some; by others they will be received and welcomed. However, they must do their work, not for what they can get out of it, but for what they can give freely to others. இப்போதனை, மலைப்பொழிவு போதனையைப் போன்று, அப்போஸ்தலர்களுக்கான பணி சார்ந்த போதனையாகும். இங்கு பணி சார்ந்த இயேசுவின் கூற்றுகளை மத்தேயு நற்செய்தியாளர் தொகுத்து வழங்குகின்றார். வரலாற்று ரீதியாக இயேசுவுடன் வாழ்ந்த அப்போஸ்தலர்களுக்கு நேரடியாக கூறப்பட்டது எனினும்; இது நற்செய்தியாளர் மத்தேயுவின் திருச்சபையை மையப்படுத்தி எழுதியதாகும். இந்த திறந்த வெளி போதனையின் முக்கியத்துவம் ஒவ்வொரு காலக்கட்டத்திற்கும் பணிக்கான நடைமுறை வழிகாட்டுதல்களை வழங்குகின்றது. தங்கள் பயணத்திற்கு விரிவான தயாரிப்புகளை செய்ய வேண்டாம் என்றும், கூடுதலாக பணமோ அல்லது ஆடைகளோ எடுத்துச் செல்ல வேண்டாம் என்றும் சீடர்களுக்கு இயேசு அறிவுறுத்துகின்றார். ஆவியிலும் உண்மையிலும் கடவுளுக்கு பணி செய்பவர்களுக்கு இச்செயல்கள் கவனச் சிதறல்களை உண்டாக்கும். அவர்களுடைய நற்செய்தியை கேட்பவர்களும் பெறுபவர்களுமே பணியாளர்களின் தேவைகளை பூர்த்தி செய்வார்கள். இத்தகைய எளிமையான வாழ்க்கை நிலை அவர்களின் நம்பகத் தன்மையையும் உண்மை நிலையையும் மேம்படுத்தும். இப்போதனை ஒருவரின் தனிப்பட்ட சொத்துகளை அல்ல, மாறாக இயேசுவின் உடனிருப்பே உறுதியான ஆதாரம் என்பதை ஒவ்வொரு காலகட்டத்திற்கும் நினைவூட்டும். இயேசுவின் முகவர்கள் எளிமையாக, கடவுளின் அனுகிரகத்தைச் சார்ந்து, இயேசுவின் உடனிருப்பை ஏற்று வாழ்பவர்கள். இயேசுவையே ஒரு சிலர் வரவேற்று, ஒரு சிலர் நிராகரித்தது போல இவர்களையும் இவ்விரண்டு நிலையில் நடத்துவார்கள். ஒரு சிலர் அவர்களை நிராகரிப்பார்கள், மற்றும் துன்புறுத்துவார்கள். வேறு சிலர் அவர்களை வரவேற்று ஏற்றுக்கொள்வார்கள். இருப்பினும் அப்போஸ்தலர்கள் தங்கள் பணியினை தொடர்ந்து ஆற்ற வேண்டும். கிடைக்கும் என்ற எதிர்பார்ப்போடு அல்ல, மாறாக இலவசமாக கொடுக்க வேண்டும் என்ற உந்துதலோடு தங்கள் கடமையைச் செய்தல் வேண்டும்.
