14th Week in Ord. Time, Friday – 12th July 2019 — Gospel: Mt 10,16-23
Be a vulnerable sheep
When Jesus sends us to bear witness to him in the world, he does not send us out as dominant and strong, but as weak and defenseless. As sheep in the midst of wolves, Jesus expects us to walk fearless toward wolves and not away from them. With His strength, Jesus exhorts us to transform wolves into sheep, but doesn’t expect us, the sheep to turn as wolves. In sending the vulnerable sheep, Jesus cautions that we will be treated the way wolves treat sheep. The wolves will deliver the sheep to courts and the sheep will suffer persecution from both religious and secular authorities, as well as resistance and division within families. However, since all authority belongs to Jesus, he might intervene and shut the mouths of the wolves, like he did the mouths of the lions that surrounded Daniel. In the face of tribulations, Jesus urges us to trust in the guidance of God’s Spirit and in the Father’s providential care. Even though the sheep are proverbially stupid, Jesus counters that notion by saying “be wise as serpents”. So vulnerability, not stupidity, is the point of calling us sheep. Be like snakes, not sheep, when it comes to being smart. For the snakes are quick to get out of danger. In the midst of wolves, be innocent as doves, which is to keep your reputation as clean as you can. And so both the snake-intelligence and the dove-innocence are both designed to keep the vulnerable sheep out of trouble.
இவ்வுலகிற்கு சாட்சியாக இயேசு நம்மை அனுப்பும்போது, ஆதிக்கம் செலுத்துபவராகவும் வலிமைமிக்கவராகவும் நம்மை அனுப்பவில்லை; மாறாக பலவீனமானவராகவும் பாதுகாப்பற்றவராகவும் அனுப்புகின்றார். ஓநாய்களின் நடுவே ஆட்டுக்குட்டிகளாகிய நாம் அவர்களிடமிருந்து விலகி இருக்கக்கூடாது; மாறாக அச்சமின்றி ஓநாய்களை எதிர்கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்று விரும்புகின்றார். இயேசுவின் உடனிருப்பு வலிமையினால், நாம் ஓநாய்களை ஆட்டுக்குட்டிகளாக மாற்ற முயற்சிக்க வேண்டுமே ஒழிய, ஆட்டுக்குட்டிகளாகிய நாம் ஓநாய்களாக மாறிவிடக் கூடாது என்றும் அறிவுறுத்துகிறார். பலவீனமான ஆட்டுக்குட்டிகளை அனுப்புவதில், வழக்கமாக ஆடுகளை ஓநாய்கள் நடத்தும் விதத்தில் தான் நாமும் நடத்தப்படுவோம் என்று இயேசு எச்சரிக்கின்றார். ஓநாய்கள் ஆட்டுக்குட்டிகளை நீதிமன்றங்களுக்கு இழுத்துச் செல்லும். மேலும் ஆட்டுக்குட்டிகள் மதம் மற்றும் மதச்சார்பற்ற அதிகாரிகளிடமிருந்து துன்புறுத்தல்களும், குடும்பங்களுக்குள் எதிர்ப்பும் மற்றும் பிளவுகளையும் சந்திக்க நேரிடும். இருப்பினும் எல்லா அதிகாரமும் இயேசுவுக்கு சொந்தமானது என்பதால், தானியேலைச் சூழ்ந்திருந்த சிங்கங்களின் வாயைக் கட்டியது போல இயேசுவும் தலையிட்டு ஓநாய்களின் வாயைக் கட்டிப் போடுவார். துன்பங்களுக்கு மத்தியில் கடவுளுடைய ஆவியின் வழிநடத்துதலிலும், இறைத்தந்தையின் பராமரிப்பு அன்பிலும், நம்பிக்கை வைக்கும்படி இயேசு கேட்டுக் கொள்கிறார். ஆட்டுக்குட்டிகளை பாரம்பரிய பார்வையில் முட்டாள்தனமாக கருதினாலும், பாம்புகளைப் போல விவேகமுள்ளவராக இருங்கள் என்ற முரண்பாட்டை முன்னிறுத்துகிறார் இயேசு. எனவே இயேசு ஆட்டுக்குட்டிகள் என்று அழைக்கும் போது முட்டாள்தனத்தை அல்ல, மாறாக பலவீனத்தையே சுட்டிக் காட்டுகிறார். ஆட்டுக்குட்டிகளைப் போலல்லாமல், பாம்புகளைப் போல புத்திசாலித்தனமாக இருங்கள். காரணம், பாம்புகள் ஆபத்துகளிலிருந்து விரைவாக வெளியேறுகின்றன. ஓநாய்களின் நடுவில் புறாக்களைப் போல, உங்கள் நற்பெயரை முடிந்தவரை காப்பாற்ற, கள்ளம் கபடற்றவர்களாக இருங்கள். எனவே பாம்பைப் போல விவேகமுள்ளவர்களாகவும் மற்றும் புறாவைப் போல அப்பாவித்தனமாகவும் இருக்கும் போது பாதிக்கப்படக்கூடிய ஆட்டுக்குட்டியை சிக்கலில் இருந்து பாதுகாக்க முடியும்.
